This is a joke thread, but, in all seriousness, I'd love to see a Harry Greb detractor that was well-versed and researched on their subject and could actually argue plausible and logical points. Just to see, what can Greb be criticized for? There isn't anyone like that, maybe because Greb is as great as they say and those who research them can only come back impressed. I'm hoping Klomton's book, and I'm sure it will, provides a good even handed case on Harry Greb.
How is Laszlo Papp overrated now? I know he probably shouldn't be in the IBHOF but other than that you barely hear people talk about him.
Most Greb detractors are future converts. D.T will be one in time. In seriousness it's difficult to compete with the knowledge on Greb without having done extensive research yourself. klompton and others have put in the work, and that amount of work is not going to be matched by someone who doesn't care for Harry Greb. If I were to take away from Greb's record I would start from his lack of decisive finishes. Winning a million newspaper decisions is fine, since the results have been mainly confirmed by later research, but it's not quite like knocking out your foe, leaving no questions or room for speculation.
Greb does benefit from the poor tactics and research of his detractors. They miss every trick they could have. At the end of the day though, they are on a hiding to nothing. Trying to detract from Greb's record, is a bit like trying to put out the fire of London by pi55ing on it. What exactly could he have done for an encore?
A, if knockout power were the crteria, than Ali couldn't hold a candle to either Joe Louis or Jack Dempsey.Cutting up his bigger opponents, with a blizzard of punches ,that left Greb's victims feel that the were in a threshing machine, is quite decisive, thank you !:hi:
Ali scored stoppages in his biggest wins though. I'm not sure if he would be quite as legendary had he scored unanimous decisions over George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier in that third fight.
There is a thread right now, that in all seriousness asks why Greb ( a 5 foot 8 158 pounder who was blind in one eye and wasnt a big puncher) never fought Harry Wills (a six foot three 210 pounder who could box and punch). Think on that for a minute. When you are such a badass and your record so stacked from top to bottom that this is the type of matchup people question you having never fought... Well, its kinda hard to argue you are overrated. As truly badass as Jimmy Wilde was when was the last time you wondered why he never fought Harry Greb or even Ted Kid Lewis for that matter.
I find it amazing that you lot, who are supposedly "knowledgeable", don't know the meaning of OVERRATED. When I say he is overrated, I don't mean he did achieve great things. I'm not saying the fighters aren't great. What I mean is that some of his fans think he is the best thing to ever happen in the history of mankind. Same goes for Papp. You fools must go back to school and learn English.
He was obviously a great fighter. But i get the feeling that i would detest his style, sort of like a psychotic version of Calzaghe on roids, not aesthetically pleasing. He probabaly is overrated, completely different era and no film footage, but his record is top notch. I'm not sure how his style would translate at all though.
