Eventually, Lewis came to be very well known. It was because athletes would see him and they recognized the talent combined with size he brought into the ring. A favorable impression brought respect and it spread out to the general sport fan population. The problem with the Klits is no athletes have ever been impressed with their athleticism (it is "okay" at best .. but not at all impressive) and everyone thinks they fight like pusses WHILE always being the larger man in the ring. Add to that the universal opinion that the division is devoid of talent then these victories over "C" class opposition does nothing to alter those previously or earlier established opinions of the Klits as large, mediocre/average athletes. There used to be regular get togethers with football players, basketball players, etc. to watch heavyweight boxing all through the 90s. When the vids came over of the Klitschkos everyone thought they were flat out limited and weak. The interest in heavyweight boxing has long passed as the last greats retired or passed from the scene early this decade (and the NFL/NBA and college football and basketball took over as big business). Nothing the Klits have done has altered that impression or changed any minds over here. The champions from this era will not be completely forgotten - they were never even recognized or acknowledged.
I'd never heard of Brock Lesnar before he joined the UFC. But then I have no interest in WWF so that's probably why. I do think he's going to gain more popularity though, as time goes on. They found he can actaully fight (unlike Kimbo Slice) so they're gonna market the hell out of him. If Lesnar and Fedor fight it'll be absolutely HUGE. I agree with whoever said MMA = Fedor. Fedor is considered the #1 P4P fighter in the world. Which kind of makes him the toughest man on the whole planet.
Was reported in the Brit press and on Buncys boxing hour. It's not unusual for a British fighter to take a big traveling support. Plus Germany is only just over an hour away.
Just to add to the arguement: I tried this, google Brock Lesnar then google Wladimir Klitschko. Lesnar - 2,010,000 Wlad - 423,000 Hell even typing - Brock Lesnar MMA - returns more - 683,000. Although to counter we have: Fedor - 957,000 Mike Tyson - 3,970,000 Lennox Lewis - 417,000 Ali - 4,240,000 Take from this what you will. Whoever is more popular one things for sure, more people are writing about Brock.
Lesnar gained a huge fan base during his WWE days, and now that he's in the UFC he's WAY bigger than before. Lesnar ATW.
yeah, people know Lesnar more now than ever. i gotta admit though, guys around me know the name Klitschko, whether they care or not.
Google Trends Top Part is the search volume graph, Bottom Part is the news feeds volume graph. Boxing - MMA - UFC http://www.google.com/trends?q=boxing%2C+mma%2C+ufc Klitschko - Haye - Fedor - Lesnar http://www.google.com/trends?q=klitschko,+haye,+fedor,+Lesnar+&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0 draw your own conclusions.
interesting.. ...but I still stick to the initial idea, the shocking possibility of an MMA heavyweight champion being more popular than the heavyweight champion of boxing in America. This I think would be a first.
Most of the people I know don't like him. I mean the guy just lays on top of people, how is that interesting.
Of course Lesnar is going to be more popular. UFC, MMA is taking over TV. Go to any sports channel, including Espn FNF and what commercials do you see---UFC. i watched FNF last week and there was not one commercial for any upcoming boxing show, but there was like 30 commercials for UFC,Strikeforce,IFL,MMA, etc...............Its bull crap that the same tv execs that said boxing was too violent to show on basic cable are the same asses that are sucking off Dana White to get UFC on their channels.............Ask this question in 20 years, and no one will know about Lesnar, just like the hype that was surrounding Kimbo Slice (he seemed to fall off the face of the earth). Look at the history of all sports and you will see that boxing is the highest grossing TV sport in history.....Tyson-Lewis had more viewers than the top 5 Suber bowls combined..................Its a matter of exposure, and UFC is being exposed by the media daily........Why did USA TODAY take their monthly boxing rankings out of thepaper and supplement it with UFC rankings---To gain customers? Why is there a 2 page article in the LA Times about Forrest Griffin, yet nothing mentioned about local HW Cris Arreola fighting for a HW belt?
