Horsehit. Don't pretend Toney never had to work his arse off for years like every other fighter. I love how Toney nuthuggers are starting to suggest he was never even dedicated. His greatest achievements were when he was fully committed in & in his best condition, so you can **** off with that excuse. When out of shape he struggles with B level fighters.

Assuming he remained focused & not been devastated by the Jones loss, which is when the excuses began, what else would he have achieved? Another title run at 168? He would've never achieved anything at 175 as when in shape he still couldn't even beat Griffin, let alone a Jones or DM.

Toney had more "natural" skill but it only took him so far, & he had one noticable weakness he never could fix. Overall Hopkins was more complete & clearly surpassed him.

Hopkins was more consistent and had all aspect of the boxing game covered. Toney had the skills, but was not disciplined enough to put it all together. Hopkins and ATG and HOF and Toney is a HOF. But Toney in my mind is not ATG.

The Toney of the first McCallum fight vs the Hopkins of the Trinidad fight.

    Toney '91 vs Hopkins '01 at 160lbs.

There is no hypothetical match conceivable that I would rather see more, and no hypothetical match conceivable that I have less of a clue about how it would go.

    I love them both dearly!

If you had the power, would you choose that fight over Whitaker-Duran... Ali-Marciano... Foreman-Liston or Robinson-Leonard ? :think

In that matchup I go with Hopkins. Toney is good but he usually exploits the weakness of a fighter like he did with Nunn in 1991 -Nunn was lying on the ropes and not having a proper gameplan. Hopkins in 2001 was too experienced for James in 1991, and then after that James would not have made weight. I think Hopkins is just too consistent and didn't have a big enough weakness for Toney to exploit. Bad style for James.

Yes. That is my one fight I would make if I had the power to make one. I know they are not the two best fighters ever, but they are two of my all-time favourites and I just find the prospect eternally intriguing. Second choice Whitaker v Duran.

Hopkins would have easily and convincingly outpointed James Toney at any point in their respective careers.
