James DeGale and Frankie Gavin are confirmed for title fights on September 18th. DeGale will be defending the WBA international title over 12 rounds. This rules out fights agaisnt Paul Smith, George Groves and Brian Magee. Tony Quigley and Kenny Anderson are fighting each other in september in a title eliminator, and Tony Dodson is moving up in weight. Tony Salam has also just beens sent down. In terms of logical opponents this leaves Carl Dilks, Steve McGuire, Paul David the English champion and Prizefighter winner Patrick Mendy. If its not one of these 4, DeGale may have to look beyond the UK. Frankie Gavin was supposed to be fighting Curtis Woodhouse, but he pulled out due to injury. Next week Dean Harrison is fighting Night Wright for the English title. The winner of that would be a logical choice. Perhaps they could even go for Jason Cook or Steve Williams for the vacant Commonwealth title if Ajose Olusegun vacates. Billy Joe Saunders is not down for that card but I am sure he will be out again soon. It seems like he is fighting at Middleweight. Paul Samuels would be a good test. He punches hard enough that Saunders will need to box well to win. Danny Butler would also be a good choice.
Renda vs Billy Joe would be interesting. Gavin vs Bradley Pryce would be great. DeGale vs Paul David or maybe Elcock if he is still around...
Maybe he's not quite ready for this big of a step up in his first 12 rounder, but I'd like to see Gavin face someone like Soulemayne M'Baye or Naofel Ben Rabah. If they need to stick with UK fighters, someone like Colin Lynes might make sense. I like Samuels for Billy Joe. As for DeGale, I think he'll need to fight mostly the Euros as opposed to UK fighters. There just aren't enough solid veterans around the weight in the UK, IMO. I'd love to see him fight someone like Brian Vera, but that will never happen.
degale wont touch david, to soon for his team to acept it. over 12 degale would look bad against david if not get beat, you can garrantee he's not in the aquasion for 18/9, for degale.
DeGale vs. Dilks BJS vs. Renda Gavin vs. Woodhouse would have been awesome if it came about, but some domestic small hall fighter like Adil Anwar or a shot Lynes
I don't think Lynes should fight again. He's clearly lost his appetite for it after the loss to Branco in Italy, before that he really looked like he could go places. KO losses to McCloskey, Olusegun and the poor showing in Prizefighter despite getting to the final doesn't look good..... time to call it a day instead of letting Gavin pound on him.
I know....the fights I listed are more than likelyl not going to be on any matchmakers mind but they are my personal hopes....Gavin vs Pryce could be stunning even if it is above Gavins current weight. Where is Barry Morrison fighting now?
Not seen him in action for a long time but an elim with Gavin would be fine. The division has plenty of decent fighters so elims will hopefully be needed for any domestic title.
I would call this the top 15. I would be happy to see him in with anyone from 15-6 in his next fight.
