Peter's only three good wins (or TWO wins, since he should have lost the first Toney fight) have been over old, shot fighters nearly 40, Toney and Maskaev. The only time he's fought a prime, world class heavyweight, namely Wladimir, he's lost.

Chagaev has five good wins, but only one of those (Skelton) was with a fighter at or close to age 40. Virchis, Valuev, Sprott, and Ruiz were in their early to mid 30's. Two of Chagaev's wins have been over opponents who've never lost to anyone else before or since (Valuev and Virchis).

Wlad has to throw more combinations without being worried. If he doesn't use his right hand enough against someone like Haye, he would be in trouble. That's what made Haye have the confidence to call Wlad out in the first place.

Peter, Chagaev, and Valuev can all be argued as the #2 guy. they are interchangable at this point.

Better than 1) Maskaev, a 39 year old who had been stopped five times before and had been inactive for a year and a half and 2) Toney, a shot, fat blown up old middleweight! :yep

Peter. Chagaev has two good wins, but seems to be wanting to fight bums now.

Well, we're talking about the no2 not the champion... sorry, just joking.

As I said it's a toss up btw the two. Why I think Chagaev deserves the no2 spot more than Peter is that his resume is equally good if not even better with Ruiz, Valuev and Virchis and he has much better skills.

He backed out of the Ibragimov fight because of a serious illness and a fight with Krasniqi would make sense from a financial point of view (not arguing that Luan is nowhere near a legit contender level nowadays though).

Peter doesn't hold the linear title. The linear title doesn't pass down from fighters who didn't win the belt in the ring against the linear champ. They have to either unify the titles, or become the Ring Champ... which ever flawed system of linear/lineal champ you use. Either way... that invisible belt doesn't get passed on by winning the title that used to be carried by the linear champ but dropped... if that was the case than the WBC, IBF and WBA Champs would all be linear champs because Lewis didn't lose any of them in the ring... he vacated them all at one point or another for refusing to fight his mandatory.

Without any doubt Wlad is the present nr.1 at heavy weight. As for the number 2 I for my part have Chagaev 2.
    Valuev 3,and Sam Peter nr.4.
A pity that Peter' s next opponent will be either Vitaly or the winner of Gomez vs Virchis!
Sam Peter is tailor made for Povetkin who would beat the slow African black and blue.

Compared to most of the other HWs, sure, but when you're holding a belt, one would hope that you have more than one top-10 fighter on your resume, more than 3 top-20 fighters on your resume, and more than 5 top-30 fighters on your resume.

H2H, I think he loses a rematch to Valuev, loses to Peter or Povetkin, and is pretty even money with Ibragamov.

Frankly, I just don't care that much anymore. The HWs have been absolutely **** to watch since Vitali retired.

Peter was number two ever since he went twelve with Wlad and the way that fight turned out to be. Actually, after seeing that IBF eliminator and Wlad's easy take over the IBF title ( and defending it), there should be no doubts about who is Number 1 and who is Number 2... There is no reason or evidence to say that Chagaev should be rated above Peter. Chagaev beat Valuev and that is an important achievement but he is not completely past Valuev as yet. Peter beat Maskaev and Toney twice - and that should prove that he's able to deal with hard punchers and slick boxers.

Peter is the only heavyweight titlist that fights like one in the division, going for the KO. He already gave Wlad all that could handle. He has improved since that fight and I think that he will do better the next time around.

Skill wise at the moment, as far as who could beat the other top contenders I'd say Chagaev.

Position wise, as far as who has positioned themself in the second spot to recieve the next real crack at Wlad I'd say Peter.
