If the fight was one five-minute round, going to a decision if there is no stoppage, who is the p4p greatest?

Who suddenly becomes a lot tougher to beat?

    Who has their effectiveness reduced?

Would BJ Penn have a shout for p4p #1 ATG under these conditions? Several of his losses agaisnt big-name fighters, he dominated/won the first round with ease, and then gassed and got beaten up.

Who else would be much, MUCH tougher to beat over 5 minutes than they are/were over 15 or 25? :think

And which great fighters would be significantly disadvantaged, because they take a few minutes to warm to their task?

 I've always wondered who's the greatest fighter in the 2nd minute of the third round myself...

Best 1 round fighter is Anderson by the way

I was scratching my head at the thread for a second, Haggis; but I will give it some leeway. A real fight is normally over much quicker than 5 minutes, and it would not be safe to be on the ground for long spells in a group environment. Especially if said group were participating in the fight.

Off the top of my head, I would say Shogun or Fedor. Both fought at an elite level, and both have a fair amount of 1st round stoppages.

I just glanced at their records, and they both have a good number of stoppages happening in under 5 minutes.

    Fedor has 18.

    Shogun has 11.

I thought of Chuck as well, because he has excellent take down defense and knock out power in both hands. Chuck has 8 stoppages in under 5 minutes.

I think Fedor and Shogun are a little better because of a more variation in ending a fight.

Ahhhh you wikipeidia'd me, in keeping with a Haggis post

Still though being serious for a minute. Shogun does diminish strictly talking about his UFC tenure. Of course you could cite the Machida fight as a counter point, but Lyoto is hardly known to push the pace. But I think finishing Arona in one is probaly one of the most impressive 1st round stoppages in the sport, or in the UFC my vote would go to Penn v Hughes 1

Maybe it would make more sense if we high jacked this thread slightly and made it about most impressive 1st round stoppages...

Franklin v Anderson, Anderson v Leben, Belfort v Wandy, JDS v Cain and so on

There are many guys who explode right out of the gate in a fight, but fade down the stretch due to poor conditioning, adrenaline dump etc. BJ Penn wins or at least is very competitive in the first round in just about all of his losses that I can recall. But then he fades.

Penn lost to Hughes by stoppage in the 2nd round in their rematch, but he won the first round. Hughes couldn't get the takedown while BJ was fresh. Hughes may not have the ability to beat BJ Penn in a 5 minute fight, full stop. Either by stoppage or decision.

Conversely, there are fighters who prefer to start slow, to warm up to the task.

For instance, the Diaz brother's volume punching becomes more effective as the rounds go on. Their level of cardio and fighting style make them a big problem for a tired opponent - they tend to close the show strong.

Therefore, the question is fair I think. :good

They don't have to win by stoppage. Just win the first round. :good

He strikes me as a guy who is at his best a couple of rounds into the fight, when he has broken his opponent's will to win by kicking his ass standing AND on the ground. :good

I thought I addressed your point in making this thread with my first post. I'm drinking, and don't know how to say it better. If I didn't get it, my apologies.
