I think it will be someone who is famous for something other than just their boxing career like Marciano with his untimely demise or Jake LaMotta for the masterpiece scorsese biopic Raging Bull.

George Foreman and his grill is probably the answer although Holyfield is another very recognisable name due to his infamous duels with Tyson.

Jack Dempsey would have been the most famous for a long time but given how long ago he made his name he probably isn't that well known among younger people.

I would guess all the top 5 most well known fighters are heavyweights.

What are people smoking when they say Joe Louis, Ray Robinson and the likes? You ask 100 random people who they are and maybe 10 have heard of both of them and that's me being very generous. Show a picture and you will be lucky if one single person can name them.

I'm in the UK so it may be a bit different but still!

Mayweather is the 3rd most famous, without question. The older generation of today & his grill means big George Foreman comes 4th. No one else comes close apart from possibly Joe Frazier & that's again because all of the older generation will know him.

It's debatable whether Apollo is even the third most recognised boxer in the Rocky series of films, let alone the real world.

Purely in Australia, i think it would be:
    1. Ali
    2. Tyson (though he is probably losing ground)
    3. Anthony Mundine
    4. Jeff Fenech
    5. Evander Holyfield
    6. George Foreman
    7. Kostya Tszyu
    8. Lennox Lewis
    9. Danny Green
    10. Lionel Rose (dropping fast)

    4. Ivan Drago
    5. Creed Jr
    6. Tommy Gunn
    7. Mason Dixon
    8. Thunderlips (assuming he qualifies)
    9. Union Jack
    10. Spider Rico
    11. Joe Frazier

I'm not sure. In terms of face recognition if you show people a photo of Apollo (Carl Weathers), Clubber (Mr T) and Drago (Dolph Lundgren), it's debatable to see in what order those three would be in.

There is several ways to look at this:

Who is the most famous TODAY a very short sighted question.

Who is the most famous long term is probably the better question. That would be Ali, Louis and Dempsey. SRR should also be added to the mix.

I think this varies DRASTICALLY based on location and time period. 75 years ago, Joe Louis would be the obvious #1 choice because everyone, boxing fan or not, knew who he was...but nowadays it's only boxing fans and older people who remember him. In 25 years, Muhammad Ali will mostly have faded out of the general public's consciousness, and Tyson will in 50 years.

I'd say it has to be Foreman, in large part due to his grill.
