listen mate,i was involed with scott his full pro career and i can honestly say his skill factor was brilliant ask any of his opponents or sparring partners.ive never known one man to send so many sparring partners home before there time.we will never now how scott would have got on with the mexicans,no way would he have been out his leauge, but one things for sure no one in Britain could lace his gloves at the time.if scott were english he'd have been a superstar! end of

The one guy he'd have had half a chance with is Pacquiao back then.

Marquez and Morales both stop him.... Barrera might too.

There isn't much argument about the third best Scottish boxer is history.............it's Jackie Patterson world flyweight champion from 1946 to 1948. Patterson lost the world title to Rinty Monaghan from the North of Ireland.

I am not sure Scott Harrison would make a Top 10. The Top 5 don't take much thinking about. After that i would have to put my thinking cap on.

Here's my Top 5 ATG Scottish fighters.

    1. Buchanan
    2. Lynch
    3. Patterson
    4. Elky Clarke
    5. Watt

His skill factor was brilliant when you're comparing him to British or even European fighters, which is what you are doing. You are certainly correct there.

At the top level it wasn't brilliant and he had a couple of bad performances where he wasn't even facing the Marquez's, Barreras or Morales' of this world.

How good he looked in the gym and against less than stellar opponents is not particularly relevant when we're talking about whether he's the 3rd best Scottish fighter of all time. He simply isn't. The only way you can even make that case is the 'would of could of should ofs' but even then I think he's being overrated to say he could have achieved so much more in such a good division.

I clean forgot about Walter McGowen. I'd have him joint 3rd with Patterson.

    1. Buchanan
    2. Lynch
    3. Walter McGowen
    3. Patterson
    5. Elky Clarke
    6. Watt[/quote]

Look sorry I do not mean to disrespect anyone but I think this is a slight lack of knowledge.

Scott Harrison was a cracking fighter in his day he did well winning a 'world' title belt and defended it well in a handful of times. Although he never proved himself the best in his weight, never had a real defining victory like other great scots, and IMO was not the best of his time, unlike other Scot champions. I'm a big fan of Harrison's but I'm realistic and I study history of boxing, I just do not think he is up there with the other greats.

Mr Nelson, you are biased. It's not a bad thing though you was Harrison's cornerman throughout his career. But I'm not having a go, I don't know your boxing knowledge. I'm just purely asking how much have you studied the other great scots?

You might have studied them and still rate Harrison numero uno. That is fair enough, but I geniunly do not think he belongs in their class at the top end of the spectrum.

Is he ****. Buchanan never fought Arguello.

I really like the win over Tracey Harris Patterson.

Kent I was forgetting someone, and my namesake as well.

You know anything about Elky Clarke? I know for a fact that Nat Fleischer rated him extremly highly and had him in his top ten Flyweights, but beyond that I know very little.

Actually reading your second post, I think Patterson has a very valid argument to be rated above McGowan.

    Sorry misread you BB.

Arguello vs Buchanan is an even match up IMO. Think Buchanan nicks it though just because he is one gritty *******.

In my opinion it would have to be Jim Watt (although my knowledge of the older pre-60s fighters is non existant)
As for Scott Harrison that man should not be mentioned in this discussion at all, hes a disgrace to Scottish Boxing and nothing more than a common thug

Wow. I think Harrison can be merritted for discussion in a top ten Scottish fighters thread so naturally he should be mentioend in this thread. On the fact he was a common thug that is fair enough but taht should not exclude his boxing achievements as there have been plenty of worse men involved in such discussions.

Up to the 1950's Britian ruled the flyweight division.

Stuck in amongst the Brits were two of the greatest flyweights of all time Pancho Villa and Fidel LaBarba. Villa was the greatest Filipino until Manny and probably second only to Jimmy Wilde in the all time great flyweights.

Elky Clarke fought at the same time as Villa and LaBarba. Clarke fought his whole career in Scotland and England and established himself as British, European and Commonwealth champion and he had plenty of defences. He eventually went to the states to fight LaBarba for the world title. He took an awful beating off LaBarba and ended up having to retire with an eye injury sustained in their fight.

Clarke was one of the best Flyweights in the world at a time of the greatest flyweights of all time. Didn't win the title but no shame in losing to LaBarba who is a Top 5 ATG Fly.

Cheers Strongback, you think Fleisher may have overrated him? Do you not think he is quite Lynch's and McGowan and Patteron's class?
