Scotland had McGowan at Fly, McCormack at middle and Calderwood at light-heavy, at one point ALL 3 of them in the world's top 10 and Gilroy coached & trained them all.

even though Martinez is rated the best SFW in the world at present? by the way tracey paterson was a 2 time world champion and scott schooled him aged 22 in madison square garden no mean feat

Ok, Ismael Laguna was the best Lightweight in the world at the time. He on film looks a lot better than Martinez IMO and has much better wins like over Carlos Ortiz & Mandos Ramos to name two, and they are both alot better than Nicky Cook. Also Lightweight then was a much stronger division than Super-Featherweight is now.

I agree the Patterson victory was a really good one, I just dont think Patterson is as good as Ruben Navvarro.

He's second in the Ring's list:

And my God, but the SFW division hasn't looked this bare in a long, long time. I mean Mzonke Fana is their No.1?!?

Well I'd certainly put him above Fana and the rest of the South Africans in that division who like to pass the belt around between them.

But you've gotta admit that its an absolute ****-poor division in world terms.

I'm not sure what year Fleischer put this list together but as he died in 1972 the list is still at least 40 odd years old.

Considering its age it's still remarkably accurate. As we know Fleischer favoured old timers and that means some of his lists are well out of date. Take a look at his last heavyweight list for example:

reckoning it looks very biased to the old timers. The same can't be said of his Flyweight list.

ts I put him in the same company as Patterson and McGowan although both the latter two won the title which elevates them slightly above Clarke IMO.

As for Benny Lynch........he's was a bit more special. If he had kept a lid on the bottle he could have been up there with Wilde at the top. A very sad story, finished boxing at 25 and was dead of malnutrition a drunken bum at 33.
