I'd put Bivins a level below
    Jackson
    Wills
    Langford
    McVey
    Jeannette

Yes two split decisions when he was 36 years old ,very creditable but the trouble is that's about it, other big names on his winning record are distinctly missing.

It's a shame Butler couldn't (wouldn't) stay in shape he had some good power and a stout chin. I'll never forget being excited that he was fighting Lewis on HBO and getting his shot on the big stage and then he came in weighing over 260 pounds..............

The best of the bunch is hard to assert because they didn't compete.

It is easier to assess the chances of dethroning a current champ to see who would have been the most likely champ had they got the shot.

I do apologise for my horrific derailment of a thread though, I don't understand forum etiquette

No guy who gets knocked out by Chris Byrd (Lionel Butler) should ever be described as having a "stout chin."

Elmer Ray's best "name" win (Charles) was considered a bad decision.

There was nothing controversial about Shavers' wins over Norton, Ellis and Young.

And Norton and Ellis were top contenders when he starched them. Norton was the #1 contender - a few months removed from his epic fight with Holmes. Ellis had only lost to Ali and Frazier in the previous nine years.

So, yes, they were top guys.
