Earnie Shavers is the most overrated heavyweight on this board. about half his win list conists of tomato cans with losing records and his best scalps are either hasbeens or green horns like young. His comp was no better than Gerry C00ney's, and Gerry never lost to men like Ron Stander or Bob stallings, so if we're honest he should rate higher.

Don't do that. Shaver blasted away Norton and lost a razor close decision to Ali.

He looked like a better version of Povetkin against Larry Holmes and Povetkin is one of the best guys around today.

Sometimes Shavers looked terrible but when he was on , he looked fearsome with fast hands and feet.

    Frank Childs
    Bob Armstrong

So you're saying Gerry C00ney is the best black heavyweight to never win the crown?

Shavers knocked out Young, Ellis, Norton, Bugner and he nearly defeated Ali and Holmes.

C00ney was supposed to fight Bugner and pulled out. C00ney was supposed to fight Shavers and pulled out. And C00ney never came close to beating Holmes.

    Oh, and C00ney wasn't black. There's that, too.:good

I think if you knock a guy out early in one fight, and you knock him down and he manages a draw in a rematch ... that it's safe to say you are the better fighter than the guy you've dropped in multiple fights and stopped at least once.

Believing the other guy who never won "might" turn the trick later is wishful thinking.

Mark Breland got knocked out by Marlon Starling (after leading him most of the way) in the first fight and fought to a draw in the rematch. And when his trainer Lou Duva told Larry Merchant that Breland and Starling should fight a third time, because he thought Breland would win, EVERYONE laughed at Duva.

I know what Young did with Lyle and Foreman, but Shavers was better than Young. He proved it in the ring.
