I doubt Floyd was actually afraid of Tony, he picked the actual champ and if my memory is correct he made the same money, roughly $8million

Floyd would have boxed his ears off. 34 year old Oscar at 154 would have taken Tony's head off and also had a great chin. Floyd stepped up and beat him

 

He seems to think fighters fighting with their face and getting hit is somehow morally superior. I fundamentally disagree and place a premium on fighters being defensively responsible. It’s called the sweet science of boxing for a reason. Saying. that I am fond of C.J.despite his stupid views. I understand it comes out of his love for his buddy “El Cheato”. The thing about C.J. to be fair to him is that he is not a vicious racist like some others. I don’t expect to always agree with people on here but we can have good honest discussions. A good example of this is my dialogue with @The Real Lance and @Maidanas Gun Tattoo. Frankly to my shame and discredit I actually disliked Lance in the past not realising his opposing views were sincere. Now we dialogue better, in fact he gives me reasons to reflect on some of my views as we discuss. Once you get past C.J. obsession with Margarito you will find a good decent guy. He has been very supportive of my countryman the lost talented heavyweight Ike Ibeabuchi. I need AJ to channel his inner Ike Ibeabuchi against Usyk tomorrow. Some people think with Robert Garcia in the corner AJ will fight like Maidana, No that is not a AJ rather we need Ike Ibeabuchi vs Chris Byrd type of performance. AJ to do it for Britain, England, Nigeria, Ogun State, Shagamu, St George, Oduduwa and defeat the valiant Cossack warrior Oleksandyr Sasha Uysk.

 

Very true point Floyd chose to fight the champion in Baldomir and got more money than what Top Rank offered for Margarito.

"Woulda's" mean nothing though. Both had the opportunity to box his ears off. Both ran away from that fight. Hell, Oscar was going to fight the winner of Cotto - Margartito 1 until it was Tony who walked away the victor. The Oscar was all, "Maybe I'll fight Paul Williams, since he beat Tony" Until P Will said sure

I will concede that Floyd did carefully manage his career late on, but let's not pretend he doesn't have a stellar resume

How many of his opponents hadn't at least held a portion of a world title in his last 20 plus fights?
I sometimes wish castillo got the decision first time out, because I honestly believe Floyd would have fought everyone had he a loss on his record

The obsession of being undefeated actually slightly hinders him in greatness. However, imo he was 100% the best and most talented boxer of his era.

We can argue who is greater and Manny may actually be greater, but Floyd is a better boxer

 

I'm gonna say something very controversial, I think it was Miguel Cotto. He gets complaints as to why he is even in the boxing hall of fame, but honestly when does he get his flowers? He gave Floyd the fight if his life, made Pacquiao pay heck with a busted ear: mind you these were the two best guys, of course the third best guy loses to them. People can argue that he is a contemporary great so that means "he did great in his era, not all time." So using that logic, all the great fights he brought us and shared blood and guts with us as viewers, this is the name that I draw attention to. And forget that he had no pristine "0". That's better yet for Mayweather type legacy in his own right. And let's not forget Manny was the pound for pound king when Cotto fought him, most fans still have a bad taste in their mouth from him losing to Floyd so easily. I could bring up other names but I think Cotto gets his props!

If you're talking about 3rd best for a GENERATION then you should take in account many names, as there were many boxers. Good thread.

I Know Floyd was terrified of Tony The so called TBE literally **** himself when he saw Tony standing in front of him. He went ballistic stuttering & stammering finally losing control of his bodily function. Oscar saw how Tony beat the living daylights out of Cotto making him kneel in submission ROFL!! Heck Cotto still couldn't beat a one eyed Tony after he'd thumbed him in the second round. He had to call on his doc to stop the fight because Cotto was ready to quit AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
