Perhaps surprisingly, only two threads with Gianfranco mentioned in the titles.

Frankie Burns out of New Jersey.
(Not to be confused with Oakland Frankie Burns.)

    Record: 137-24-25
    (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=52579&cat=boxer)

Burns was a multiple-time challenger for the bantamweight title and he holds the great honor of fighting 176 times before suffering a KO loss.

Over his career he defeated many a talented fighter, the most notable of which being: BW champs Johnny Coulon and Monte Attel and Hall of Famers Memphis Pal Moore (3x) and Pete Herman twice (once by TKO). He damn well might have won the BW title in 1912 had for not a slip in the 20th round that reports advocate gave his opponent, the aforementioned Coulon, the edge in an otherwise completely even fight through 19 rounds. In his next two attempts at BW supremacy, he fought well enough for DRAWS against Coulon (again) and Kid Williams.

In what would turn out to be his final title shot—a matchup against a familiar foe, Pete Herman in 1917—Burns withstood a great deal of punishment over 20 rounds, refusing to be finished.

But 8 months later meets Herman for the 3rd and final time and ****ing WINS the rubber match!

How many welterweights can beat middleweights as good as Jeff Smith and Tiger Flowers and never be mentioned?

Sure he's been mentioned some but not nearly enough .. Mike McCallum may have beaten Hearns, Leonard, Duran and Hagler but never got the shot ... truly one of the most underrated fighters of the second half of the 20th century ..
