GSP did the stupid thing against Hardy in that he listened to Renzo Gracie in his training. Renzo advised him never to hit and only to think about control. Which can be good advice, don't get me wrong, but it was absolutely horrid for this match. GSP could have pounded Hardy into oblivion and put himself into better positions in that fight. Good advice for straight BJJ, not so good for MMA grappling.
This is true. If you notice Matt Serra and Ricardo Almeida do or atleast did do the same things when the fight hits the ground its straight BJJ for them and they struggle to get submissions in MMA bouts sometimes. In MMA you gotta take advantage of your extra tools which is the striking if a guy is stalling you break it by punching him, trouble passing ? Punch him. I think if GSP used more vicious GNP his stoppages would occur much more frequently.
Hardy was tough and worked on a **** load of escape manouvers with Serra. You see him work on the armbar escape on tape and he did it. Not everyone will sub, just like not everyone will get ko'd. Maia was all over his last opponent and couldn't sub him. This is overall grappling though and not BJJ. GSP grappled the hell out of Hardy and locked on numerous subs. Only thing missing was a tap.
GSP made too many mistakes. The Hardy fight showed the glaring holes in his game. Even Maia screwed up in his last fight. He should have grabbed the leg to prevent his opponent from rolling out of that armbar - yet failed to do so on two occasions. He would have hooked the submission otherwise.
I know that, still what Roger has done in BJJ and No Gi is insane. It is just nuts. For the record Jacare would beat Maia comfortably in an mma fight.
Good point, Roger does have the trophies, no question. Not so sure Jacare would be dominant at all over Maia. The rules do favor a Jacare decision though, but I think Maia could just as easily win.
It's hard not to make mistakes in the thick of it. The best make mistakes. However its VERY hard to ko someone who doesn't want to be ko'd. It is similarly hard to sub someone who doesn't want to be sub. Guys like Alvez and Hardy had NO intention of grappling so everything they did was almost completely defensive. The easiest ko's and subs come when someone makes a mistake and opens themself up.
