Gerry Cooney also said in an article his great grandmother was black and he's 10 percent African-American.

So, the more you dig, the more "Irish" Gerry Cooney is about as Irish as Cassius Clay. (kidding, kinda);)

Practically no one in the US whose family has been here a generation or more is "all anything."

    Melting pot, and all that.

Yeah where was that from? One of those DNA tests? Hell, one of those told me I was 10 percent American Indian! Bit strange as I have lived in the Isles all my life, and as far as I know the family have too. But from what I remember, Cooney’s people are from Galway and Cavan and he’s been over a few times.

I thought Jack Dempsey was born in 1895 in Manassa, Colorado? Anyway, he claimed he was of Irish Ancestry, with some Cherokee Native American on his mother's side. I will take him at his word and call him an Irish American. I rank him pretty high on my all-time list, so I will name him the best Irish American boxer of all time.

Yes, Mac. Technically and officially that is true. But the OFFICIAL name is Northern IRELAND, not West Britain, not West Wales, not West England, not West Scotland. And it is called Northern Ireland because it is on the island of IRELAND. If you were to ask Wayne McCullough and/or Carl Frampton what boxing team they fought on as amateurs, they would say the Irish team because like the rugby union team, it is a united IRISH team, not part of a UK team.

The Rugby Union team of Ireland covers Northern Ireland ! I didn't know that. And that is okay on the northern irish players ? They are fine with wearing the green shirt ?

Yes and yes. The north of Ireland soccer team wears green as well even though they are usually loyalists.

in terms of fighters who identify as irish american it has to be Jerry Quarry, Micky Ward, and Cooney. Doubled back after watching JQ vs. Frazier in the other thread. Wow JQ was a tough son of a gun.
