Buddy McGirt...just kidding. Well, Roach has had a pretty good run the past few years. I'd still be wary if I was ever lined up against a Nacho or Steward fighter though.
What makes him clearly the best except he is your favorite fighters trainer? That being said I think it depends on the style of the fighter
well for one he's got more Futch-Condon awards than anyone else. Twice as much in fact. Its not "he's the best cause he's my favorite trainer". Its the other way around.
I think what truly makes a great trainer, besides guiding a very gifted athelete through championship fights, is the ability of a trainer to take a fighter with limitations or a real flaw and change his style or develop it around those flaws or limitations. Eddie Futch, Emanuel Steward, Tommy Brooks and Roach all shown the ability to do this. Coincidently Brooks and Roach both worked under Futch. Thell Torrance is another one who worked under Roach for a very long time, but I dont think he ever developed into the trainer like Roach and Brooks have.
Angelo dundee. Lou duva. Eddie futch. those are my top 3 look at the amount of great fighters(world champions) they have trained.
trainers/coach is over rated. they can help but not making a crappy boxer good. it takes one good boxer to make a trainer relevant.
