I'd probably say Marquez is more proven and after his tremendous performances against Diaz and Casamayor, he had a lot more stock going into his last fight against Mayweether, than Cotto did against Pacquiao. But quite simply, who is the bigger draw?
Cotto and it's not even close. The Mayweather PPV numbers was by far the highest he made selling a fight, the Pac rematch was $400k and the Chris John fight made $0.
probably the same. marquez was p4p#2 and cotto was a well known welter. both have an entire country supporting them.
Cotto gets a big crowd in the east no matter who he fights. Marquez only really draws when in against a big name. It's Cotto, hands down.
The Chris John fight is irrelevant. Marquez was largely unknown at that time. That's like someone using the Baldomir fight to show that Mayweather isn't a draw.
Marquez on Mexican independence day...remember they postponed the fight to that weekend for a reason.
I think they're very comparable. The Pacquiao-Cotto fight did a little bit more than Mayweather-Marquez because the Pacquiao-Cotto fight was looked upon to the masses as a better matchup. When you look at the fact that a great majority of people viewed the Marquez-Mayweather fight as a physical mismatch, its actually pretty impressive that their ppv buys exceeded 1 million. It all depends on the matchups.....for intance, Mayweather-Cotto imo would have sold more than Mayweather-JMM........ .......and on the flipside, Pacquiao-JMM would have sold more than Pacquiao-Cotto. People try to equate PPV buys with one particlar fighter, when its actually the matchup that has just as much if not more to do with the buy rate.
That says it all. 11mil mexicans in the US, the best mexican fighter fighting on mexican independance day. We dont even need to argue this, we only need listen to Floyd himself. Skip to 3.35! [yt]_sfM0PxaD3c[/yt]
