This may be so but because Hatton really looks like most Brits in a general sense. Possibly because he is Italian and carries the Welsh flag?

Why? Calzaghe is far more articulate, urbane and polished.

I can barely understand what Hatton is saying, he is very incoherent.

Calzaghe is boring and doesn't do much media work. And articulate? Only if you think stuttering is articulate.

Hatton's a funny guy and does a lot of TV.

Since you asked who is the bigger star in England id have to say Hatton. Because hes English.

English fighters will always get more attention from the media in the UK because they are biased towards English fighters. Obviously the public eats this up and therefore any casual fan in an English pub will know all about Ricky Hatton. When it comes to Calzaghe they really dont anything other than what he looks like, hes Welsh/Italian and hes quite good.

In England Hatton is bigger, in Wales however it's all Calzaghe.
If your question were to include the entire nation (England, Scotland and Wales) I'd still pick Hatton as the bigger star. But Joe is by far the better boxer.

Talk all the **** you want about Hatton, I'm not here to defend him, but people like him because he is open, friendly, "normal", and not "untouchable". You could go have a pint with Ricky in his mum's pub, or walk into the gym when he's training. People can relate to that, and that's why he's popular.

From the outside you would think Calzaghe, especially if he beats Hopkins. He is bigger, has the better record, bigger heart and better looks. Hatton looks like he has been getting punched by ugly gloves for years.

Hatton is far more popular because he's one of the lads, loves a drink and a curry, loves to have a laugh with fans and tell a joke. Calzaghe is unsociable and distant by comparison and he doesn't play up to the fans; he does the opposite, in fact.

Please man. There's no need to lower the tone with stupid comments and rolling smilies. Your post doesn't actually make any sense anyway.

You're so right man, beating the WBA/WBC unified champion in Kessler, what a bum, a complete nobody. It's a pity there aren't more Americans in the SMW division, if there were you'd show us Eurobums how to unify belts and win fights right? :-(

I didn't know the answer was this clear cut. I feel kind of dumb for asking this question now. :desk

If you don't ask you will never find these kind of things out. Never feel dumb for asking a question as it's one of the best ways of learning.

Oh shut up, Hatton is bigger (or has more fans) because he's a chav/'one of the lads'/drunken idiot/whatever you want.

Calzaghe had been a nonentity for ten years because he's a had a crappy, b-level career. Since he's been fighting live opposition (Lacy, Kessler) he has become one of the biggest sports stars in the UK; receiving at least as much attention as Hatton.

So please, cut this persecuted sheep-shagger thing OUT, okay?

I think Joe's fighting style is less appealing to the average boxing fan, than say Hattons. As some posters already mentioned, Hatton seems like a man of the people, while Calzaghe comes off as a cocky *****, so I could definitely see why Hattons more popular.
