Hatton so far in England. His love of beer and football strikes a chord with the man in the street/pub and his happy-go-lucky nature always goes down well on shows like "Question of Sport" or "Soccer AM".

But Calzaghe's profile is rising all the time and I'm sure he'd have the bulk of the support if he fought a lesser know English fighter like Carl Froch.

Wales, of course, is a different matter altogether.

When Hatton says 'little', does he pronounce it "Lickle" or "Ickle"? Either way it annoys the **** out of me:fire

Is he trying to be popular by sounding like a thick twat or a child, or do all mancunians talk like that?

In England, Hatton because he's English...and the Welsh don't have half as much devotion to their British fighter Hatton than their own Welshman Calzaghe.

Overall I would say Calzaghe, now Hatton has been beaten. Before Hatton's loss it was pretty close, two very high profile British fighters.

Actually Calzaghe was born in Hammersmith, London, England..... so technically he is English/Italian:good

Remember the sun never set on the English Commonwealth:good

Hatton is the biggest star in England whilst Calzaghe is the biggest star in Wales. Wales is a country that borders England

Firstly Calzaghe is NOT English. He is Welsh.

The UK media are always more biased towards English fighters so Hatton will always be the more popular fighter even though true fans know who the better boxer is.

Calzaghe is getting more popular though as proven by winning sports personality but Hatton's character of being "one of the lads" and getting pissed down the pub will always appeal to the average bloke.

Calzaghe is also a more down-to-earth and private person who doesn't do much media so it's no surprise that Hatton is the more popular really.

Hatton is more popular, even though Calzaghe is the better boxer. People who don't even watch boxing, stay up to watch Ricky Hatton fights.

There's been a lot of bollocks spoken in this thread to be honest, from "Hatton is only loved because he's fat and drunk" to "Calzaghe must be better because he won BBC Sports Personality of the Year" and then "Brits only love a loser like that plodder Bruno (who also won Sports Personality of the Year I think)

The bottom line is this - the average Brit boxing fan is knowledgable about the sport (ignore all these Calzaghe sack swingers) and therefore rates Hatton higher as a fighter because he had the nuts to take on Tszyu, then kick Frank Warren into touch and go for big fights, leading to his loss against Mayweather. He didn't win but at least he had the bollocks to take on the P4P number 1 in the sport, even if it was at a higher weight than his own. Calzaghe had exactly the same opportunity at exactly the same age as Hatton when Jones was P4P number 1 and 7lbs heavier than him, but all we heard was Joe making noises about being the best and fighting bums.

Hatton may have lost the fight but he won many fans in just taking the fight in the first place. Calzaghe had a lot of fans to start with (REAL boxing fans I mean) and most of them deserted him, only to be replaced with the kind of fans that WALD would be proud of :nut because for 10 years he took the cowardly path because he knew if he'd actually stepped up and tried to fight Jones he'd have had his head taken off.

Bravery counts for a lot with us Brits, and that's why Hatton is more popular.
