No, any success for Calzaghe drives him further away from being loved in England.

thats bollox, everyone has jumped on the Calzaghe train since he won the BBC personality award, even my mum knows who he is.

Still not as popular due to being a quiet guy who dosent go out making headlines by getting fat and being one of the boys.

Exactly. Though i wouldn't say it was the Englsih public, more like the English media. As we all know, the British media are incredibly biased towards the English.

Can you imagine if Ryan Giggs was English? The British media would have been wanking over him for years and years and he'd have celebrity status like Beckham most likely.

    Hatton.

The average football fan who likes to pretend to have a broad knowledge of sport(though they more often than not have a superficial at best understanding of football) will say they support Hatton and come out with the old cliches of 'he seems so down to earth, hes just like us likes a chinese and an indian and a pint n that'. Hatton is much more widely known i think due to his constant appearances on that sorry excuse for a football programme the chavtastic soccer AM.

JC despite all that hes done and his crowd pleasing style is no where near as popular. Hatton is Britains biggest boxing star since Prince Naseem.

All my friends know who hatton is, only a couple know who Calzaghe is, none of them are boxing fans though. Hatton's just more a working class hero type of guy. Also, Joe C is Welsh..sporting heroes from Wales, Scotland or N.Ireland never get as much publicity. This is coming from a Scot.

Thats probably because the jocks feel the need to show off how Scottish they are, and the Welsh feel the need to show off how Welsh they are rather than British, because of this the English media dosent give them the limelight as much.

Frank Warren has a lot to do with this. Im not sure but I think I would you know, maybe promote Calzaghe as a international fighter.

Oh im from the West Mids, and honestly, that border along Shropshire really doesnt alter my opinion of the people across it.

Soccer AM is the biggest disgrace on television.

It breeds supposed fans of both football and other sports that become know it alls that know **** all.

I disagree that Calzaghe is the better boxer. As I stated before in this thread had Calzaghe been a warrior and moved up to take on the P4P number 1 in the sport when he had chance (like Hatton did) then we wouldn't have been talking about this, as Jones would have KO'd him brutally inside 6 rounds. At least Hatton managed to make a fight of it against Mayweather, Calzaghe V Jones wouldn't have been competitive.

there is a strange feeling in britian to support the underdog. the ones who are not top elite fighters. this in itself is typical brtish fashion we love losers...but charismatic losers. bruno was running rings round lewis in the pressers, made lennox look like a fool. you saw what hatton done took all the cockyness of floyd and turned it around as a bad thing.

calzaghe is just to much of an average, boring guy.....outside the ring
