Who is the bigger star in England: Calzaghe or Hatton?

its no secret that fans love hatton. he's a personality outside the ring so england will always love him. just look at the turn out in begqas for his fight agaisnt floyd. PBF should be embarassed he had less fans in his own backyard. JoeCal is a boxing spoiler. he wins with flashy, but ineffective flurries and just by making his oppenent look worse then him round after round. so hatton is the answer to this poll question.

 

Ricky Hatton is the bigger of the two in Britain. He has alway prided and pushed himself as being British, Joe Calzaghe far less so.

 

Giggs has never courted the media like Beckham and his idiot of a wife.

Hatton is by far the more widely known of the two. It has nothing to do with who is the more talented. I've met Hatton on numerous ocassions on nights out, he is friendly and very approachable. This part of his personality, makes people like him.

Hatton also does far more media work than Calzaghe. The only time you hear about Calzaghe is on the week of his fights.

It basically comes down to personality. Look at Trinidad..when he would win fights every ghetto city town would erupt in psychotic puerto ricans forming a mosh crowd down the street celebrating his win like it was the fkn superbowl or some ****. When Cotto wins, No one comes out...it just isn't the same. Hatton has that kind of personality that just connects with euro people like Tito connected with Ricans.

 

There are 50 million English people and 3 million Welsh. That may explain what some people state as "media bias", when in fact it is simply giving credit proportionally.

 

Actually, Calzaghe has been around much longer and accomplished much more, huge draw, no doubt about it.

 

Obviously Hatton as he is English and their are 55m people, Calzaghe is Welsh and their are 3m people, if Hatton was Welsh and Calzaghe English then it would be the opposite.

 

True, but do not underestimate Calzaghe's popularity there.

 

Ring accomplishments aside, Hatton is a lot more popular with non boxing fans/ general sports fans because he courts, and is good at, getting publicity. Calzaghe has never really bothered with that side of the game. In any sport the most popular guy isn't always the most skilled, people who are saying "the Brits love a loser" or "Joe is way more skilled" are totally missing the point, one boxer loves the publicity and makes an effort to be personable, the other can take it or leave it.

Calzaghe beating Hopkins will have minimal effect on all this.

That's it exactly. Some guys have the personality to be popular, others do not. It doesn't relate at all to in-ring ability but just how people are.

Bruno wasn't popular because he lost all those title fights, it's because he had that big booming laugh and played up the self-deprecating joker so much. In real life he wasn't quite the person he made out to be, but the personna was a winner.

 

I think the general consensus is that Calzaghe is the better boxing but Hatton the favoured son. Hatton is a top bloke while Calzaghe is another Welsh man living in a mud hut some where up an hill.
