I think it is extremely difficult to assess Godfrey.

Several of his fights with white opponents are believed to be handcuff jobs the Risko fight for example is viewed with some suspicion.

Godfrey was kod early in his career in his 5th fight by Battling Norfolk , in his 6th by Langford' in his 8th by Jack Thompson and his 9th by Langford again. The Langford fights were patent mismatches.
In 1923 by Jack Renault the winner to fight Wills.
Godfrey was not stopped again until he was 40 years old ,a tko to Hank Hankinson. Tunney did offer to fight Wills but neither he nor Wills wanted to fight Godfrey.

I'd agree with that, Godfrey certainly did have a murky career. Six KO losses isn't a horrible number either for a contender, not great but not awful and they were at the start of his career in mismatches with the great Langford, as you said. The Risko fight has never had any real proof it was not on level but I am open to it, but Godfrey also lost to Sharkey and Renault. I can't chalk all his fights up to being tank jobs. All in all I just don't think he has the names on his resume to favor him in anyway over Tunney. He def was a victim of the time and circumstances though as many others were as well.

    Seamus,

Question for you. Have you seen Joe Louis vs Pat Valentino 1950? It took place only one year prior to fighting marciano. It is a VIOLENT knockout. Perhaps after watching it, you might slightly alter your opinion in regards to louis having "zero" power left.

Lee Savold was Louis's last stoppage victim. Valentino I believe was blind in one eye?

The fight is on film. Valentino was knocked through the ropes and looked like he had been beaten with a baseball bat. Valentino had recently put up a good fight for the world heavyweight title vs Charles.

    Seamus,

Also whom do you favor over Marciano at 200lb or below in the last 20 years?

Marciano is the most overrated heavyweight besides the Klitschkos.

only wins come against old people light years past their prime - Charles Walcott Moore and Louis

saddest part is it took him life and death to beat the first three even though he was in much better condition then those near 40 year old geezers with over 70, 90, and 170 fights at the time of their match with padded record BUM Marciano

Marciano can't carry their jock strap. BUM

Anyone know how tall Phil Muscato was? He seems to have started as a middle, so I doubt he answers the question, but it is not listed on boxrec and I was curious.
