Yeah, reason why people need to understand the difference between a boxing star and a PPV star. Huge difference between the two. I think Golovkin has reached his ceiling as a boxing star. His next breakthrough would becoming a mainstream, PPV star. For that, he'll need the right opponent as you said. Canelo would be that world class opponent. His "Oscar De La Hoya."
He needs to play by "Oscars" rules then. Fight Canelo at 155. Floyd fought Oscar at 154 with gloves of Oscar's choice.
To create a ppv star you need more than just one pv worthy opponent, there has to be a string of at least three. GG doesn't have that, if he beats Canelo and doesn't capitalize on that by fighting another name opponent even if he has to move then it will be for naught. Just the same as Hopkins before him, he had a big ppv, fought Tito, and then stayed in the weak division and never became a ppv star himself. His next ppv wasn't until five fights later against DLH.
It appears mainstream media are getting behind GGG early though. That may expedite the process in itself. I do agree though.
