Nikolay Valuev won the WBA title in vacant fashion as a result of Ruslan Chavaev being abscent due to injuries. Now boxrec shows that Chagaev is defending the WBA in February.

    What's going on here?

Valuev was named INTERIM champ from defeating Ruiz in their recent rematch, that's all

Chagaev was the ''champion in recess'' that could take his belt back at any moment but he must fight Valuev by june.Valuev's belt was counted as th regular WBA belt.

That's not true, Chagaev was demoted to "champion in recess" because he failed to defend his title against his mandatory challenger Valuev and the WBA title was subsequently declared vacant. I think boxrec is a bit quick in labeling this fight as title fight, I don't think the WBA will sanction it as a world championship.

Neither Chagaev or Valustiff are worthy of a championship belt........... HORRID!! The WBA title really belongs to Evander Holyfield..... This whole scenario stinks to high heaven right now....... Nuff said....

A bit harsh on Chagaev, he's not incredibly exciting but he is actually a very good boxer - and why Holyfield deserves the title when he didn't even deserve a shot at the title in the first place I'll never know...

Indeed Chagaev is a good deal better than Valuev and could add a bit of spice to the division.

At least Holy is a proven fighter who fights anywhere at anytime..... Chagaev and Valustiff seemingly hide over in Europe fighting on European TV sets..... Holy is old and has slowed down a great deal, but he still fights anybody.... I gotta respect that much.....

Well, that depends upon who you ask.

    1. Ruslan Chagaev is the "Champion in Recess" and also the regular WBA Champion.

    2. Nicolai "Andre the Giant Jr." Valuev is the WBA Interim Champion.

    3. Evander Holyfield and Johnny Ruiz have both filed protests against the WBA, because of the bad decisions they both got against the Great Khali. So the WBA has granted Holyfield, "Champion Emeritus" status, and Ruiz as well, and granted both of them interim titles in the meantime.

because there is so much talent for him to be jetting over to the states for? the money in the HW division right now is in europe, it would make zero sense for ruslan to fight anywhere else.

And Ruslan Chagaev, can not have a warm up fight...Just like Vittili was not allowed a warm up fight.

Yes, he can, and if it goes to the cards, and it's close, the WBA can grant an instant rematch and make the loser his own Interim Belt as well.

Chagaev already has a warmup fight scheduled. Secondly, I thought it was the other way around, that Valuev had until June to fight Chagaev. Anyways what would have happened had Evander won, would he truly have been considered a 5 time champion or would Chagaev had just taken the belt back and Evander truly never been considered champion? It gives you a headache just to think about it but as long as boxers pay up to 3% of their purse to a sanctioning body when taking part in a Championship Bout the sanctioning bodies will continue to label as many interim champions, champions, and whatever they call the other inventions these days as possible.
