Who is the first fighter you saw use the philly shell defense?

I seen Frazier's guard called the cross-armed guard.

I first saw James Toney, then Floyd, then Bhop but i know one of the earliest is archie moore and jersey joe. But James Toney lives and die by the philly shell. Floyd got a better defense than Toney though and so does Bhop who both use Philly and conventional.

 

I dont recall ever seeing b hop use the philly shell consistently, if ever. he has other philly tricks up his sleeve, but when it comes to blocking, he goes about it in an orthodox fashion.

yeah. I see those as two different things that happen to also be interconnected. you can use the shoulder roll without being an employer of the philly shell defense, while the shoulder roll is a vital part of the philly shell defense.
