philly fighters didn't event this style. it's an old school thing. go back and study footage of any old school fighter from the 30's, 40's, 50's or 60's and u'll see it. i learned this style of defense as a kid back in the 70's from tony zale who was trained by the great ray arcel and it was something i used during my whole amateur career. it's also something i teach to my boxers now.

Lets not forget Floyd Sr... also Paulie.... smh, jermain taylor smh, and judah. The last three use it mostly for looks but they are not good with it imo.

lol what Toney fights have you seen that suggest he lives and dies with the shell. If anyone does it's Mayweather, who relies heavily on the mechanics of the "philly shell". Toney slips shots in his sleep.

Lol look at some of these jokers. Cuz you know, the first time you watched boxing, you immediately selected some old timers on video and somehow knew their names

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Keepin it real

floyd mayweather wasn't even born when i started boxing. i grew up watching guys like ali, duran, holmes, leonard and plenty of others. i was shoulder rolling myself when floyd was in daipers. i learned to shoulder roll from an old white man named tony zale who when he was boxing himself was trained by another old white man named ray arcel. i wouldn't doubt that he learned to shoulder roll from mr. arcel. that's about as real as it gets.

I never heard the term before fight night either. But a good question is, what was it called before then. If someone asked you what that style was called back in 98, what would you call it?

I first saw James Toney use it all the time than Floyd. But I actually remember Pernell Whitaker in one fight climbing into the philly shell for one maybe one round in a fight in the early 90s. It was after he got hit with a right hand than he used the shell to block othe punches. The thing is though I never saw him use it again.
