10 of those yrs Calzaghe milked that title by padding his record and protecting that 0 ..The only reign I can compare that too is the Honky Tonk Man's intercontinental title reign :hey

I considered both ATG's, but Calzaghe is a 'normal' ATG, while Marquez dwells in the "Great" ATG's.

This was in another thread :

Had he dared to be great early

    Nunn
    Benn
    Hopkins earlier
    Jones earlier
    Collins
    Barkley
    Cordoba
    Littles
    Van Horn
    Liles
    Nardiello
    Close
    Rocchigianni
    Nicotra
    Johnson
    Mccallum
    DM
    Nunn
    Toney

And it didnt have to be at super middle but had he fought real comp early he would not have had that 0 ! But 10 yrs after fighting Eubank he fought nothing but stiffs !Up until he fought Kessler and Lacy ..

It really should have stayed in the other thread :nono

There isn't any reason to believe that any potential opponent for Calzaghe at 168 would have beaten him. With the exception of Ottke, he pretty much cleaned out the division.

175 is a completely different matter, and he would obviously be a big underdog against any pre-Tarver version of Jones. It's unclear how he would have fared against bigger lightheavies like Michalczewski and Tarver, as the only fights he had at the higher weight were against similar sized opponents in Hopkins and Jones.

It's a misconception that Calzaghe didn't fight the best available at 168, and not fighting in America is a complete red herring. What could have really enhanced his overall standing would have been more wins of significance at 175, many of which could have been made in Europe.

haha!! good stuff! actually i believe ricky steamboat's reign was longer with the intercontinental title. it's kind of like comparing joe's and dariusz's title reigns except the honky tonk man and steamboat were more exciting to watch.

Marquez, but I don't think it's so obvious that if you think Calzaghe you are crazy by any means. Marquez's resume without Pacquiao is very underwhelming considering how lofty people view him.

The 24 Joke Al voters should be permanently banned. Of course it's probably just three posters with several alts, but ESB would be a better place without them.

Love Joe but we just did a top 100 fighters list in Classic and everyone pretty much agreed Marquez to be on it, and Joe not.
