Who is the greater figther: RJJ or Thomas Hearns

RJJ is not THE best, but one of the best all time yes

 

Depends what range you are talking about. If you think you need to be one of the top 5 fighters in history to comfortably called 'one of the best ever', then no he isn't. If you choose to call the top 20-30 fighters in history all 'one of the best ever' then I think he is.

He is the 2nd best fighter after Whitaker since the mid-1980s IMO (I have him above Chavez), but I do see the argument for placing him above Sweet Pea.

Roy Jones, clearly imo.

Hearns was involved in some ATG fights, but he lost the two biggest fights he was in.

 

I voted for Jones, however, Hearns is my all time favorite fighter.

 

Depends on your perception of what an elite fighter is. If you are writing a top 100, and you have trouble deciding on the order of fighters all the way up to no.25 or so because you think all of these guys are elite fighters, then yes it is valid to say that guy is one of the best fighters ever, in comparison to the vast amount of guys who cannot be considered this good.

I have RJJ around 20th, but that is because of his resume not his ability. I think he has top 10 ability, and there is not really much between him and guys in the top 10 other than they had better opposition in their era, so their resumes are better. Therefore, I believe it is legitimate to say he is one of the greatest fighters ever.

i wouldn't put him in that top bracket personally. and in the last 25 years i'd have whitaker, tyson and chavez over him.i'd also be tempted to have barrera over him as well, maybe more favoritism though.

Blah blah I could make the same excuses about Hearns biggest wins, stuff like Hill being green, Duran being old.

And to say that Cuevas is a future hall of famer and Castro isnt is...well for lack of a better word stupid...At the time he fought Hearns he already had 6 loses and most of them to bad fighters, not to mention that he lost 15 of 50 fights in his career. Castro won 130 ****ing fights in an era were fighting twice a year is the norm. Cuevas a HOFer :rofl based on what??? What wins would put him in the hall, and what makes him a sure bet HOFer???:rofl

 

Me too, but it's damn close. Skill-wise I'd pick Jones and career-wise I'd pick Hearns. But to me, there's a bit of a bigger gap in Jones skill level relate to Hearns, verses Hearns career achievements relative to Jones.

So I'd give Jones the slight edge on that basis.

And should Jones win his upcoming fight by KO or win convincingly, then I think the gap widens.
