Who is the greater figther: RJJ or Thomas Hearns

Maybe Jones was lucky he fought in the era he did, maybe he wasn't. Maybe all time greats like Robinson, Hagler, or Leonard would have brought out the greatness in a prime Jones that the others failed to do. We never know.

As for Hagler knocking the **** out of Jones, to me at middleweight I may favor Hagler, at 168 there is nobody in history that beats Jones IMO

Though I actually have grown to like RJJ quite a bit over the years, your post pretty much sums up my reservations regarding Roy's place among the ATGs.

Nuthing and I mean nuthing trumps winning a HW title ... especially considering that he began his reign at middleweight and worked his way up. His frame isn't that big at all ... he probably walks around in the 180's ...

Hearns was a very great fighter but i'll have to give Jones the nod ... his undefeated run spanned over 10 yrs and 3 weight classes ... he didn't officially get beat until he fought Tarver in 04 ... 89-04 thats amazing

I'll never count that Montell Griffin DQ because he was killing that dude and was robbed of a victory.

And its pretty clear that you never seen the fights with Hill and Benitez or you wouldnt be saying that crap No hearns didnt win clearly, in fact he was ordered to have a rematch with Hill but lost to Iran who refused to fight Hill...Now show me in Boxrec were one could find that:hi:

Hearns wasn't even the best of his own era. This shouldn't even be close. A better question would be who's better between SRL and RJJ.

 

Quite a few points I disagree. Imo to be one of the atgs you have to be inside the top25. Jones is not up there, neither is Hearns but Chavez and Whitaker are.

 

Yeah, Hill was green with 30 fights and 30 wins :good And Duran was so old that he won the jmw belt from Moore shortly before and in the meantime he was the only one who went 15 rounds with a prime Hagler during his reign. Fine excuses :good

Cuevas won the WBA ww title and defended it 12 times. What did Castro what comes close to that? Absolytly nothing. Cuevas lost early and late in his career. But from winning the title until losing it he was undefeated for four years. Even when already beeing a seasoned pro Castro fought journeyman after jouneyman and lost when he stepped up.
Both lack the resume for the HoF but Cuevas has the accomplishments, Castro does not.

I don´t think he proved anything in those fights. Hopkins was at least 4 years away from his prime - considered his prime was form '97, Johnson fight, to '02, Joppy - and Toney was weightdrained and weak. Jones was lucky to meet them at that stages of their careers - also I think he always would beat Toney, much closer though, and would be 50/50 against B-Hop in both primes.

 

RJJ is a greater fighter. though hearns fought a better list of opponents, his name ended up in the resume of most elite fighters he had fought.

 

A ww winning the lhw title from a future hofer is as good as a mw winning the hw title from a mediocre hw if not better.

Jones was rightfully DQed, rules are rules. You don´t need to excuse him because you like him.

 

That´s a no contest. SRL is a lock for the top20, even very close to a top10 atg. Jones isn´t anywhere near that.

Jones should be compared to Hearns, Hagler, PBF, Hopkins, Barrera, Morales and so on. Very good fighters but not quite in the league of the true greats.
