The late Harry Carpenter was the main UK guy for me. Still got a couple of the VHS's he did on the game. So many good quotes over the years. Living current guy you might have to go to Steve Bunce, even though he can be a t wat.

Harry was a nice guy but he never impressed me his commentary on the Ali v Foreman fight was so off he had to redo it! The original one has him saying in the 8th round," Ali is so tired he can hardly hold his hands up",seconds later he kod George!Buncy is okay, nothing special, but that high pitched shriek gets on my t*ts!

Wasn't that fight shown live in UK? I can remember watching a few live Ali fights in the 70's as a nipper.

Although I may disagree with some of his lists, Tracy Callis is a great historian. Thorough research and deep knowledge. I just made the effort to find this old thread to big him up since I've read a few of his online articles recently. Highly recommendeded for those of us into the old school pugilists.

What Don King book was written by Thomas Hauser? I read Jack Newfield's book on King and it was excellent. I always liked Newfield as a historian.

That's interesting, what articles has he written that knock Ali? I think Hauser can be very good when it comes to getting info regarding a lot of stuff we don't know from the outside, but his bias can be too much and gets grating. The guy actually quoted a bible passage as a way to bash Al Haymon.

I just checked. it wasn't actually confined to Don King, it was a behind the scenes look at the business side of boxing. Don King was discussed quite a bit and there was time spent in the camps of Billy Costello and Saoul Mamby, who were both promoted by King at the time.
