Like you say, opinions are like a--holes.

Monzon has a murderers' row of Hall of Fame opposition compared to Golovkin. So I really can't say about the whole "Head to Head" thing (especially with the difference in eras). Monzon would go undefeated through Golovkin's resume much, much easier than the other way around. I also fancy that Monzon would go through Haglers' resume without losing (not counting novice Monzon in his first 8 fights or whatever where he accumulated each of his 3 career defeats).

Monzon ranks incomparably higher than Golovkin based on what they have each done in the ring. While that too is an opinion, it is one that you will find no respectable boxing mind disagrees with.

Also the whole 80-odd fight unbeaten streak - while very impressive, did include many 'draws' too, and many tomato cans...and GGGs 300+ top class modern-day 'amateur' fights probably in many ways AT LEAST matches it.

The scores were like 115-113 across the board. Jones Hopkins was no outclassing.

Roy has every advantage over Marvin except for chin and maybe ring IQ. Jones would have been a huge problem for Hagler...

Argentina had a peculiar scoring system at the time where if either fighter had less then like a 3 point lead at the end of the fight it would be scored a draw.

You see some fighters from around that time with well over a dozen draws on their record.

116-112 x 3 and he did it with a dodgy hand.

I wouldn't say it was a total outclassing either but he done it pretty easy.

Why do you need me to name them if you already know his career so well?

I've done this multiple times over the years specifically for Monzon because people don't seem to appreciate exactly the plethora of talent that he defeated.

    Monzon Lineal/WBC/WBA title reign:
    Nino Benvenuti X2; TKO12, TKO3
    Emile Griffith X2; TKO14, UD15
    Rodrigo Valdes X2; UD15, UD15
    Jose Napoles; RTD6
    Bennie Briscoe; UD15
    Denny Moyer; TKO5
    Jean Claude Bouttier X2; TKO13, UD15
    Tom Bogs; TKO5
    Tony Licata; TKO10
    Tony Mundine; KO7
    Gratien Tonna; KO5

7 year reign with 14 defenses.

Many of these in his opponents' home country; Nino in Italy, Bouttier in France both times, Bogs in Denmark, Licata in USA, Tonna in France...

So if you want to know his best victories, I would cast my vote for Benvenuti, Griffith, or Valdes... each twice.

Amateur boxing is not professional boxing. Nice try though.

As for his 3 losses (all in his first dozen fights) and 9 draws (all well before he won the title) on the record, he beat every single man who defeated or drew with him in the rematch, usually rematches, with the exception of only one of those men who got a draw.

Wake me up when Golovkin defeats someone who will be known and fondly remembered in 30 years.

Tape or no tape, Greb's level of opposition and dominance over that opposition is superior to anyone who has ever graced 160, and by a sizable margin. Middleweight was as much Greb's domain as welterweight was Robinson's.

    Good post.
But honestly - GGG would have scored early ko's against

He would have massacred old, tiny, shot-to-bits welterweight Napoles 2-3 rounds max. Ditto for Emile G, but he might last while alright.
Washed-up Italian celebrity/Film star/playboy Benvenuti might have lasted 4-5 rounds, and face-first slugger/small middleweight and very basic slugger Rodrigo may have lasted 6 on sheer toughness and guts alone. (Same for Bennie Briscoe)

Also nonito - the top ams that GGG faced were very likely along way ahead of many/most of Carlos pro opponents - particularly his early ones.....bigger, fitter, and in fact much more 'professional'.

Nostalgia aint what it used to be.....:thumbsup

I honestly don't know but since my time Leonard and Hagler come to mind.
Think either would have been on at least a par with a peak sergio or GGG in this era but generally I am against comparisons.

I agree its impossible to definitively list a 'top 5' or a 'top 10'.

All you can do is throw a list of names of past greats - and surrent - into the pot, that you would be sure are strong contenders for the overall No 1 spot.
