yeah, i tried my best to include those who i thought had the best chance of being named 'the greatest'. moore has the unique longevity and ko record. perhaps i should have included louis instead...
Marvin Hagler took on all comers, and beat them all. Robinson ducked Charley Burley. Can you imagine what Hagler (of the Hearns fight) would have done to prime Robinson? Maybe Ray would have lasted a few more rounds, but Hagler would have decimated him.
Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest & best p4p fighter that ever lived... he wins every vote outside of ESB & is actually winning this one too... & by a landslide at that.
The MW Robinson that beat Lamotta for the title would beat any version of Hagler, he was much faster, hit harder with either hand & - sorry to bring you back to reality - was just a better fighter than Hagler, period.
Hah! I think Monzon would beat Hagler, too, and Hagler is one of my favorites in my favorite division.
I can't say Hagler definitely beats Robinson but I think he has a fantastic chance. I voted for Robinson
i'm just wondering how many of the 'other' votes are for the same guy... but then i'm sure even if i'd left archie moore or ezzard charles off the poll (the fighters with the fewest votes) there still would have been an uproar!
The same version who less than 12 months later couldnt beat Randy Turpin? Do you think Turpin would beat Hagler also?
It's gotta be Langford! He's proof that title don't make a champion. Look at all the belts some bums had! Robinson was good but he was taken in hand early and had a carefully crafted path to follow to the top. At the end of the day Robinson is still a fancy dan. Langford never relied on tremendous boxing skills he did have & beat someone going backwards. He was a killer and loved to fight the hardest punchers, the slickest boxers, the most courageous men. He was wide open. The new film of the Jeannette fight cements all the myths as true! Dont act the ****, Robinson obviously underestimated Turpin & won the rematch by knockout, he never underestimated Lamotta & was in his best form as he would be Hagler as Hagler was 1 of the best ever also, SRR would respect Hagler enough to be at his own brilliant best knowing that less would almost certainly not be good enough. Im talking both at their best, Robinson beats Hagler because he was a better fighter, period !
He wasnt consistent at middleweight, that was a major problem throughout his middleweight career. It is understandable, because he was the greatest welterweight ever (probably) but not the greatest middleweight ever, although still probably one of the 10 greatest ever. Hagler had the better middleweight career adn probably would have beaten Robinson, quite possibly by stoppage. La motta wasnt anywhere near as good as Hagler, imo, and neither were any of the fighters who beat Robinson, with the possible exception of Joey Maxim whose weight and size may have posed Hagler problems because of the unknown factor, but probably wouldnt have. Robinson was a great fighter, but as a middleweight it is pretty clear that he wasnt the greatest ever.
