I think Hearns was greater than Pernell since Pernell is getting the nod here. Tommy fought HOF guys throughout his career and knocked them out. Cuevas,Benitez,Duran and Hill were 3 who he won titles from and one whom was fellow 154 pound champion. Pernell was knocked out in big fights like Tommy was, but Tommy went to war more than Pernell, who we all know was great defensively.

:huh Whitaker was only KO'd once, in his last fight. And that was hardly one of his big fights.

Anyhow, Hearns do have a case. He's got some truly terrific wins.

I think he had a broken clavicle or a dislocated shoulder or something and the doctor advised a stoppage. I don't count that against him for anything. I think it was his last fight for crying out loud.

Who would win between a lightweight equivalent of Hearns and Whitaker?

I wouldn't be surprised if Whitaker won actually. I think he'd get knocked down a couple of times, possibly stopped, but he more than likely puts a body beating on Hearns and earns a tight decision for me.

I know not even Ray Leoanrd could outbox Hearns, but imo Whitaker is a much better in-fighter and dirty fighter than Leonard, and will find a way to burrow into Tommy's body and stay close to him for most of the fight.

    Am I dreaming?

In a HTH matchup id pick Hearns any day, however overall resume id go with Whittaker.

Hearns or Sweet Pea for me

Hearns because he was so exciting to watch and had some pretty big wins in dominant fashion. Losing the biggest fights of his career was always his problem same as Oscar De La Hoya (not comparing the two)

Sweet Pea because he was so beautiful to watch! Has there ever been a slicker defensive master? Don't think so

I mispelled. Hearns has one of the best resumes in boxing history. In 4 years knockouts wins over Cuevas and Duran and decision over the great Benitez. All title fights. Then 11 years after his first win over Cuevas, he outboxes Virgil Hill who was undefeated. But the fact is that Hearns being knocked out in his two biggest fights diminished his other wins. It shouldn't, but it does.

Hearns is a great boxer and took on the best ( I know you are a big fan)

I would say Sweet Pea , Hearns ,Holmes\ Johnson

I love the big fights, but it is a shame that Hearns was around the same time as SRL and Hagler. But he did lose to The Blade and had a very close one with Kichten, if only he had a chin.

I think Harold Johnson is seriously underrated on here.

yes I am a big fan of Thomas, which makes me a partial to him. I just loved the way he came to fight and left it all on the table. My thoughts about Hearns chin is that if Pernell would have fought the way Hearns did and went for a knockout, he too might have been stopped in fights just by leaving his chin exposed during exchanges. Hearns made me the most nervous when he fought guys whom he was easily beating who could punch. He would be teeing off on them and leaving himself open like with Roldan and Barkley-who both hurt him. My thoughts are had he boxed in both fights and used his jab and landed his right cautiously, he would have stopped Roldan in 7 or 8 rounds and Barkley in 6. But He just wanted the knockout so badly he would get careless and go to war. That was probably his biggest flaw. If being a warrior can be a flaw. Tommy really did try to entertain the fans.

Yes we know bodhi, he's a relatively obscure name with a technical style. + 1 credibility point to you. You know for a fact that he is nowhere near Hearns in a P4P sense, why do you have to take it that far everytime?
