I figured you had to be wrong that Arcel trained Benny Leonard, who was born in 1896, but you’re correct. He trained guys from the 20s through the 80s, which is pretty incredible.
Manny steward told us Fury was going to be the next champ when he was a self uppercutting meme. Also told us there was a toughness in him, not to be underestimated if he would get his mind right. Guy was like a boxing prophet at the end due to his vast knowledge on the sport.
I think Papa Lomachenko needs a mention here. He nurtured Usyk, Loma, Gvovdyk. He turned the Ukraine into virtually an unstoppable force in the amateurs when before him nobody knew of the ukranian amateur boxing program. To steer his son from childhood into one of the all time talents, speaks volumes. A US trainer I had a lot of time for was Roger Bloodworth. Also the aussie trainer, Johnny Lewis, not much for the technical side of the sport but he could get his fighters into incredible shape and they would run through brick walls for the guy.
while Dundee definitely deserves some credit for Ali and SRL...I feel like they both were extremely gifted in the athleticism department and didn't necessarily win fights based on solid gameplans. Also Ali just did his own thing lol he never threw body shots, there's no way ANY boxing trainer would tell their fighter to solely target the head, so I'm not sure how much credit Dundee deserves for Ali. Don't get me wrong, he definitely deserves some, but I'd value someone like Steward more. Look at how Lewis and Wlad changed after he took charge, that to me shows that he had much more impact in shaping his fighters into what they needed to be to achieve greatness.
Ukraine only had their own team from about 1995 (before was in the soviet union) And Ukraine won plenty of medals in those years before this great team you're talking about. Any knowledgeable boxing fan knows Ukraine has always been strong at boxing. Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko, Sergei Dzinzuruk, Ismayl Sillayk, Oleg Mashkin, etc were about before Lapachenko came on the scene. Great trainer though, no doubt.
smells like a duck maybe jermell started watching old videos of kostya tszyu and got shook. tim got strong genes.
Teddy Atlas doesn’t belong near any of those other names. I’d go with Futch or Steward…. Those two trained more world champions and actually trained fighter from being kids to champions. As for my luck I chose Steward because he not only understood the boxing part of training but also the mental part and was of great benefit psychologically to his fighters as well. But you’d have arguments for guys like Arcel and Blackburn. Honorable mention to Charlie Goldman
