Michael Grant. A guy with that much of a baby porcelain chin stepping in with heavyweight boxers has a heart the size of a watermelon.

I'll cast a vote for Primo Carnera.

The Marcianos and Alis and others mentioned has the requisite skill and/or power to know if they hung in when things weren't going that way that they might have a chance to turn things around. Doesn't make them any less tough or take away from the heart they displayed, but they were bolstered by the confidence that they were on par with or better than anyone they might fight.

Carnera was propped up with easy matches and, it seems, even some fixes -- but he presumably did not know that. He gained confidence from those, only to be thrown to the wolves against Baer and Louis, men who were far superior to him in every way.

Yet he never backed down, took whatever beating his betters could unleash on him, and kept getting up and trying. His gameness, toughness and, yes, heart, were on display every time he got knocked down, yet he kept getting up and coming back for more. And even when it had to become clear to him that he wasn't a world-class heavyweight, he did not retire but kept on fighting.

Imagine being in with Joe Louis and realizing you have no real chance, but answering the bell time after time, beating the count again and again.

    Carnera was pure heart.

Ali for me, inside and outside the ring, even if I personally disagree with his philosophy and politics. Getting punched hard is one thing, standing up to public opinion and the US government is another.

Yeah but Ali said if he knew his jaw was broken he wouldn't have continued with the fight i'm definatley not saying he didn't have heart just that's not a great example.

I'd say Frazier after the FOTC and the last round in Manila when Ali wanted his gloves cut off and Frazier still wanted to go on.

    Vitali Klitschko.

Suffers from the second most brutal shoulder injury I've ever seen and has to quit from an injury everybody would have to quit from.
Gets robbed against Lewis, still doesn't quit boxing.
Has to retire to save his health.
Comes back to dominate everyone including a prime Peter
Beat Chisora one armed while having the most brutal shoulder injury ever, the pain he had was equal to having kidney stones the size of a big mandarine or a small apple and still he dominated the man.
Faced the almighty Charr at 45 years old.

The man is pure heart and guts.

Marciano...Floored for the first time in his title fight with Joe Walcott...blinded for 4 rounds..
...cut...behind on all score cards...then throwing the best right hand ever...knocks JJW
senseless and wins the title in 1952...has his nose split open down to the BONE in the 6th rd.of his second fight with former champ Ezzard Charles in Sept.1954. Being to told they might have to stop the fight,Marciano storms out and KO's Charles to keep the heavyweight
    crown...no question...Rocky Marciano...

He did take some helacious beatings and keep coming back.

Perhaps the true contenders for this title will be found not among the stronger lineal champions, but among the weaker ones who beat the odds.
