It's just against Baer he wanted to stop, i don't see Frazier etc wanting to stop ever no matter what, if the ref didn't stop it against Foreman Frazier woulda kept on getting up till Foreman killed him.

I don't think Baer wanted it to go on anymore...I know he wasn't tearing into Primo the way he did Schmeling...if he did he would have killed Primo.

Carnera was in a hospital bed that night. There are pictures of Baer visiting him in hospital.

In this period when TKOs were rarely handed out, the winning fighter somtimes ground to a standstill.

If he qualifies as a heavyweight fighter, then Mickey Walker surely in the running.

    Exhibit A Schmeling Walker.

Perhaps someone can link a contemporary account of the fight where it is confirmed by the ref that Carnera quit -- but the UPI story on the fight says the ref stopped the contest, not that Carnera pulled a 'no mas.'

On film, after getting up from the 11th knockdown (and, according to accounts that seem legit, fighting on what turned out to be a broken ankle from an early knockdown), Carnera does gesture to the ref -- and gets hit with a tremendous right from Baer that prompts the ref to step in. He doesn't turn his back on the action as if walking away in surrender, nor does he take a knee.

Carnera took savage beatings from Baer and Louis. He had primitive skills, if any, and had been propped up way beyond his abilities -- but when put in with real fighters against whom he had no chance, he was game beyond belief. Imagine being an average to below-average fighter and finding yourself in the ring against brutal punchers like Louis and Baer, and every time they knock you down and rattle you to your toes, you hop right back up and wade in for more.

To me, that speaks of tremendous heart.

Well Tyson said it himself that he never felt that tired after a fight and bought a girl out to have sex with after the fight and couldn't even do anything with her cause he was to exhausted...
That was his response to a question about who gave him his hardest fight in his prime so i'll take it from him.

Marciano isn't a heavyweight and neither Braddock. so the answer is Frazier, Foreman, Ali, Chuvalo

It's a silly question to which there is no real answer.
