RIP, one of my favorite dudes to hang out with at the IBHOF was the guy with plaid checker pants, loud looking suit jacket, that didn't match, faded hat & white shoes that seemed to slightly curl at the toes...and the smell of that cigar told you he was in the area. What he wore on ESPN, he wore it every time I saw him in person.

I can't think of anyone who ever asked him a question, that he couldn't expound on. NEVER.

Max Kellerman? A retired Larry Merchant?

Last time seeing Bert, we took a quick photo right after some Tecate Ring card girls asked if they could get a photo. I hollered out "SUGA' MAN' Still sweet to the ladies!

And with a quick response Bert said, "You know I do take Viagra...but only to keep from pissing on my shoes."

    Classic B. Sugar.

Most of the current Ring magazine writers and Spencer ‘The Knowledge’ Fearon.

So, a bunch of hacks that regurgitate myths. Just like Sugar.

You'd probably have to move forward a generation in nostalgic fashion choices. Maybe buy a Howard Cosell wardrobe?

As far as hogging the spotlight and not necessarily being correct? I'd go with Teddy Atlas.

I'm never sure who is a "historian" and who is a "writer?"
Sugar was an entertaining BS artist.
Present writers I like would include.
    Izenberg,Kimball,Ochs,Toledo,Hauser.

No one can replace sugar's charisma, but there are a few good historians out there. Herbert "Herb" G Goldman and Steve Farhood know their stuff. As far as charisma goes, Teddy Atlas and BoxinglegendsTV could be in the discussion

Based on this thread, you could just blindly pick a member of the classic forum, and they'd be the best historian to date

There are a couple who probably qualify for the title historian.

I think Sugar actually had the right approach to selling boxing history.

It's just that his yarns were sometimes inaccurate. That's not a crippling problem for future imitators; just find more accurate yarns.

@Senya13 and @BitPlayerVesti are legit and when he can keep from getting banned @GlaukosTheHammer is good too. Anything they don't know off hand they will go out and research. I'll be there in a few years too.

It sounds like the problem most people have with Bert Sugar is him being labelled a 'historian'. If he was known as 'boxing raconteur Bert Sugar' maybe people would be happy to take his stories with the pinch of salt they deserve.

Bert Sugar was our public intellectual, bizarre as that sounds.

Now that he's gone, I do kind of miss the old guy. It's sad to see his pictures near the end.

Honestly, I think there's far too much stuff I'm ignorant of to call myself a historian. I tend to be much more depth than breadth.

There's a few guys here that have done much more serious research than me TBH, like Matt Donnellon, klompton and Adam Pollack.

I'm glad you like what i've done though.

The classic socrates. "All I know is that I know nothing". Despite knowing more than anybody I know.

Honestly, if we were discussing lightweights of the 1960's or something, my ignorance would be much more apparant.
