Of course it would, same with me. But I think through a long process of research we could teach those who know all about 60's lightweights a thing or two about Greece or early english fighters. We are the next generation of historian.

Sugar regurgitated old myths,I'm sure he loved the game and he entertained lots of fans. There is always room for larger than life self publicists in the fight game, calling him a boxing raconteur would seem to fit him to a T!

Senya has an excellent site and does his research.Bit Player has an infectious enthusiasm and takes the trouble to confirm his facts,I'm a fan of your posts too.
Glaukos is an anorak nut job.

What about Al Bernstein? He was always knowledgable about fighters, even obscure ones when he was covering boxing for ESPN in the early 80's, when I first started watching the sport.

It's why I like him. He comes across as insane but everything beyond his outlandish opinions, is rooted in a solid boxing historian. If Senya is the classic historian, Bits is the enthusiastic grad student, I'm the burnout writer and Glaukos is the mad man on the corner screaming the end is near. He's got a lot of solid basis for his opinion, he just doesn't know how to talk to people.

My opinions are often too controversial for classic historians.

Everything I've ever asked you before has been impeccably sourced. If that is too controversial it's something wrong with the historians.

Teddy Atlas probably. A complete BSer that gets kudos for "keeping it real" for some reason.

You have the research to back it up and that’s the difference. Even if people disagree with your interpretation of the sources, no one could ever say you’re not thorough.

    Spot on.

The guy was entertainment and a lot of the mythologizing and B.S he spouted was for the promotion of the sport and not to be taken as gospel. I take him as a colourful and likable guy who was overall a genuine character and good for the sport and I personally don't take offense at anything he said or opinions he offered. Others who study the sport seriously may not think the same.

Different strokes for different folks but I do think losing links to the past such as he (and the much lamented John Garfield or Burt Bienstock from this site) makes boxing lose a little of its mystery and magic.

Do any other sports even *have* an official historical raconteur?
