I agree that "one-handed" is a bit harsch. Frazier had a decent right as well which he used effectively in the second fight against Quarry for example, but I haven't seen any fighter at Frazier's level being so reliant on one punch. With that said he was extremely skilled at landing that left hook even though everyone knew it was coming.

That's right, you rank Liston as #2 heavy all-time. That is quality analysis.

I wouldnt have Sonny that high ,but head to head he must make the top ten ,so if SQ puts him at 2 it isnt outrageous imo.

There is no justification for #2 whatsoever. Unless you rate on man-love for big hands or blowing out chinless tiny cruiserweights that come forward.

    it is, imo.

frankly, this circular argument grows tedious. the Liston fetishists will pass and he will assume his rightful spot somewhere in the 10 - 15 range of heavyweights, gently being pushed lower as better, bigger and more accomplished fighters wind up their careers.

There's still only a 6 month period during which he should've faced Liston, but he took an easy defence after 3 hard fights. No biggie.

As mcvey said, the Machen fight was very close.

No one said that Liston wasn't better than those competitors. Just that Johansson rightfully earnt his shot before Liston, and the rematches were all deserving fights, probably to Liston's frustration, but hey, life is tough.

Nothing you've said refuted the fact that Patterson fought the higher ranked challenger and was busy with well earnt and highly anticipated rematches.

Yes, but this was simply not the case.

To be honest, when i review film of Machen vs Liston and Machen vs Johansson, i'd much rather fight Liston than Johansson. You must remember that at this point of their careers, Johansson had won all of his fights, most via knockout including Machen in the first round, whereas Liston's best win was probably DeJohn and a string of journeymen/fringe contenders.

Johansson was more deserving no matter how you look at it.

But it wasn't despite liston losing THREE points for low blows, All 3 judges had liston ahead by at least FOUR points and the AP had liston winning 10 rounds.

The fight was very hard paced, but not close. marciano-charles was much closer.

Damato sent patterson in against C level guys like roy harris, brian london, pete radamacher instead of nino Valdez, eddie machen, zora folley.

I actually said it was competitve, which ,imo it was Machen said years after that he hurt his arm prior to the fight otherwise it would have been closer I dont how much credence we should place in that ,just thought I would mention it.Machen was a solid pro the Ingo blow out was an aberration, imo ,he underestimated the Swede.Ranking lListon is tricky his defeats to Ali were so ignominious ,especially after the persona he had carefully cultivated as a Frankenstein type stone killer,if Im feeling generous I would put him at no 6 ,behind Holmes and just in front of Foreman.

The problem with the Patterson Ingo series is that it tied up the title for three years,Ingo was the no 1 challenger when Floyd defended against him,no 2 was Valdes no 3 Folley ,then when Ingo was champ the no 1 was Folley Floyd at 2 Liston at3,the following year Floyd champ Liston no1 Ingo 2 Machen 3 and Folley 4.So Machen and Folley along with |Liston and Valdes were frozen out of it while Floyd and Ingo played pass the parcel with the title ,thats why return bout clauses were eventually outlawed.

Going purely via accomplishment i have to think Frazier is a bit above Liston.
