did tunney prove his chin at heavyweight like walcott did? Walcott fought around 15 punchers at heavyweight, including many over 200lb and only louis and marciano knocked him out near his prime after many rounds. Gene only faced one, a sub 200lb heavyweight jack dempsey who floored him for 14 seconds. Walcott was knocked out early in his career when he was a starving hobo falling over from exhaustion, while tunney was never knocked out in his career. gene never faced a heavyweight over 205lb

    whose your pick?

Very Good Match It Would Be An Awsome Fight---could Go Either Way If I Had To Put Odds On It I Would Say 4/3 Odds On Tunney.tunney Is Really Really Underrated He Had A Tremendous Left Hook And An Even Better Right-his Power Was Actually Pretty Damn Good But His Skill Was Awsome But Man A Prime Walcott Could Always Catch Him.its Depressing How Greats Such As These Have Slipped From The Average Fans Memory.sorry But Even A Past Prime Dempsey Is A Bad Example He Is Problobly The Most Underrated Heavy Of Yesterdays Im A Constant Reader And Veiwer Of Anything To Do With Dempsey And The More I Learn The More Im Amazed.

Tunney was more durable. He was only down once in his entire career, and fought many more fights than Walcott did. This one should be a no brainer.

If we are just talking chins ,it is a diifficult question to answer.Walcott was stopped 6 times, but among those were kos by Louis, and Marciano ,monster punchers.Walcott was possibly not in good shape when Abe Simon stopped him,Tiger jack Fox could hit ,and Al Ettore was a respectable banger. The fact is Walcott met a lot of heavy hitters and won, whereas Tunney only really met one top banger a fading Dempsey who floored him .It hinges on the fact that apart from Dempsey no one put Tunney down ,but his heavyweight opposition werent bangers,Risko,Gibbons ,Madden,Herman, were not known for their power.Walcott weathered the punches of Ray,Layne,Louis 1,Gomez ,so he is more proven in a sense. I find it impossible to state with any kind of certainty who had the better chin, but look forward to the posts.

I agree. Walcott took punches from far bigger bangers than Tunney ever did. Gene either fought lesser punchers or men who just couldn't hit him. I pick Walcott as the more proven in the toughness area.

P4p it is hard, Tunney was tougher than most believe imo, but Walcott, as many have said rightly above, fought some of the hardest bangers ever, 3 of his stoppages were to 2 of the greatest his division ever offered. We are talking in the HW PRIMES though right? Which would mean there's not an awful lot of fights to take into consideration of Tunney , in comparison to Jersey Joe anyway.

I'll pick Walcott because of the nature of the thread

How come I never hear Michael Spinx was as durable as tunney at heavyweight? afterall, spinx fought the same amount of fights at heavyweight tunney did, except spinx fought 200lb + men tunney did not. Spinx was only down vs mike tyson, as tunney was vs dempsey. except spinx fought the lightheavyweight punchers of his era and tunney did not.

It seems to me people give tunney as pass on his chin, when he really did not prove it anywhere near a guy like walcott did who actually faced the best punchers of 2 different decades.

    Mendoza,

    3 questions

    1. What 200lbers did tunney face?

    2. What heavyweight punchers other than old jack dempsey(who put gene down for 14 seconds) did tunney face

    3. What punchers in general did tunney face?

Tunney had a solid chin but lets face it he did not face Prime punchers like Louis and Marciano....Dempsey was a puncher and the shots he hit Tunney with were intense and he got up...but Dempsey's Legs were starting to betray him from inactivity. Still to compare that form of Dempsey to the form of Marciano and Louis that Walcott faced is not really a good baromitor and is it the chin or the recupritive power that is the issue here

I gotta go with Walcott he fought a lot bigger punchers, Tunney only really faced one who was past his best.
