Being an American I realize that both Calzaghe and Hatton are big in the UK. But who is more popular? From what I have seen it seems like Hatton has the bigger following, is this a fair assesment?

I would say they are about par in terms of genuine boxing fans, if anything Calzaghe more popular.

In mainstream, Hatton pretty easily. He is a more personable kind of geezer, in truth. Calzaghe comes across as arrogant - though this isn't the case at all, IMO.

calzaghe is widely regarded as the better fighter but hattons more likeable. calzaghes career has been gradually built up to the climax its coming too as well where as hatton sort of burst onto the scene and was very exciting to watch, not so much now, sadly.
don't know exactly why hatton takes 30 thousand over to vegas where calzaghe didnt manage as many, although he did take a lot. maybe cos he's welsh some english boxing fans arent as keen but that certainly doesnt apply to me.

Among true boxing fans, Calzaghe I would say....

The UK went a little mad for Hatton in the buildup to Mayweather, but mostly the non fans who know **** all.

    Haye divides opinion, I'd say.

People like him as a fighter, but are sick of the constant chit-chatter - though this will come to an end in a week or so's time.

I'd say British fighters, in terms of popularity (gen. fans + mainstream) are as follows..........

    Hatton
    Calzaghe
    Haye
    Froch
    Woods
    Khan
    Munroe
    Murray
    Mitchell

    After that I'm struggling.

Hatton gets a huge amount of the general public following his fights; he has more of a football (or soccer) following.

Calzaghe is more respected due to his abilites. No real boxing fan gave Hatton a chance against Mayweather, but the British public bought it. I nearly did myself, until I saw the 2nd round. Then I knew, there was no chance for Hatton.

Fair play to him though, he did okay in the first round, and I think he showed that he has very underrated foot speed and movement. I assume this is what Floyd Sr is going to try and harness.
