Well he was supposed to. Ofcourse more people would be cheering for the underdog because only then will it be meaningful. A fighter who's expected to win a fight will not harvest praises. But a fighter, against all odds, who wins will be impressive. Nothing impressive if a shark eats a seal. But a seal killing a shark would be awesome.:hey
atsch The guy starts a thread about Calzaghe and Hatton... But he just cant resist inserting Mayweather's name in there. 50 posts, 45 with Mayweather's name in it.
Hatton is, for reasons already stated. Such as his style, especially earlier in his career. Also the way he burst onto the scene, his likeable personality and for being from a working class familly from Manchester, he's the working class hero. Hatton was promoted and hyped much better than Calzaghe but with Joe taking on these legends in America I'd say he is gaining a lot of fans fast but still isn't on the same level as Ricky. Joe has never been PPV in the UK. If Haye takes on Klitschko I assume his popularity will sky rocket but he is unheard of in the main stream here as of yet I'm afraid. Haye and Calzaghe are on Setanta, Hatton and Khan Sky Sports which more have so get a lot of exposure. Khan, like Calzaghe started his career on ITV I think, terrestrial television, but Calzaghe didnt quite capture the public imagination and went about his business for years without much fuss from the UK.
Hatton is obviously going to have bigger support because hes English and naturally going to have a lot more support from a larger population. His character is a big factor in that people support his down to earthness and outgoing personality. Calzaghe is naturally more introverted but is getting more and more well known now especially after winning Sports Personality of the Year.
England is a much larger country than Wales & I dont doubt that a lot of Welsh like Hatton & a lot of English like Calzaghe but there as those that follow a fighter primarily because they are from the same country as them meaning that Hatton will be more popular as England has roughly 50 million & Wales lucky to have 4 million. Also, Calzaghe is more of a shy character outside the ring as opposed to the outgoing Hatton. Most agree that Calzaghe is the better fighter tho.
