I say Miguel Cotto, his combination of speed, power, accuracy, and unheralded defense is something to behold. He is a true boxer puncher, he posses incredible agility and coordination yet he is built like a tank and can bang with the best of them. He also willing to fight the best. I dont want hear anything about his chin, because to be honest with you at 147 he has never been really hurt. And Judah is a great puncher and Mosely is a very good puncher and they never had him in any serious trouble. He will bat Margarito convincingly. Mayweather may have his great defense, but I assure you that Cotto can match his hand speed and create openings with timing. Money also lacks power at the WW level, and this great boxer hardly ever sits on his punches and in my opinion boxes a bit too much for my taste. He is more concerned with defense than in offense so he lacks that special balance of boxing and power that Leonard, Robinson or even a Wilfredo Gomez had. Calzaghe is also very good but he lacks true power as well, but if he beats Hopkins this weekend convincingly I may have to reconsider. I respect this guy and his performance against Lacy was just as just as good as Mayweathers against Gatti but Lacy was and undefeated feared champion not a washed up club fighter.
Cotto has it all, but in short amounts. The most complete fighters are, imo, Mayweather and Calzaghe.
PBF 1st, but Cotto is inching ever so close, curious to see if the Cotto that looked like an ATG against Gomez was because it was Gomez or Cotto was that good. Calzaghe is 3rd, he just doesn't have that sweet style of Floyd or Cotto, but he is very very effective.
Mayweather.....slickest fighter in the game, incredible hand speed and footwork, controls the pace and geography a fight, a pugilistic technician and is a thinking fighter, one of the most unforgiviing counterpunchers today, can fight inside, outside and mid range, may not be a huge puncher at welterweight but because of great tecnique and balance he has been able to hurt every opponent he has faced(save anvil-chinned Baldomir). He isn't the best p4p for nothing, he is the most complete fighter today
Cotto is very good but, Gomez is a gatekeeper type so basically Cotto was supposed to look great. Cotto isnt on the street of all-time greatness(accomplshmentS) but he sure has the goods(talent) to get their.
Its not about physicality ... its also about ring smarts, experience, and overall fighting ability. When you guys name Cotto, all you can name is his physical attributes, nothing about his skills. Floyd has good defense, he uses the ring well and unlike other fighters is comfortable in every area of the ring (corner & against the ropes) - he makes fast adjustments, has quick reflexes, he always fights his fight and is never sucked in to fighting someone elses fight.
Surpised no mention of Hopkins. At 43, you have to be a complete boxer to compete at his level. PBF #1 but Hopkins # 2
Floyd junior then Jo Calzaghe, he is a no frills fighter he does the job by any means necessary........... Cotto isn't far beneith those two...
