Doubt it since Tyson is not the poster boy for extremist muslims and Ali has publicaly denounced Bin Laden and 9/11.

    Ali-boom-ba-yay Ali-boom-ba-yay

Mosley - De la Hoya - Trindad - Lewis - Sugar Ray (both) - Hagler - we could name a lot of them. Especially the guys from back in the days. It was around the 80's when the so called bad guys started showing up. That's when they figured out the Bad Guy Role would sell more tickets.

Ali in the 70s was bigger than you know who....;)

To this day he must be in the top 10 most recognized names; not bad for someone who has not won a boxing fight for nearly 30 years.

Popularity wise, yes he has to be the most popular current/former boxer at the moment; mind you if this was 1967, me thinks the results would be different.:yep

Take him off the list. His fan base didn't extend very far outside of New Jersey. People will forget about him in 5 years.

People have already begun to forget about him. His last fight at the Boardwalk hall wasn't even close to selling out.

Max Schmeling is Germany's athlete of the 20th century and seems to be loved worldwide. My grandfather was part of the German resistance against Hitler and he and his friends knew that Schmeling was one of the few celebrities who supported them - protected his jewish manager, protected two jewish children during reichskristallnacht, got send on a suicide mission as punishment, helped out Joe Louis - class act if ever there was one.

Some people are just nuts tbh.

It is sad when people assume all muslims are nut jobs. When the vast majority of them are normal people, its just they get no publicity where as the extremists do :-(.

Number 1, I don't hate the guy, number 2 I've seen him fight way before the Mayweather fight. Gatti is basically a regional fighter. To call him one of the most beloved fighters of all time is a stretch to say the least.

Id say Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jack Dempsey, ...these guys were loved when the sport was the mainstream sport beside baseball.
