I know some of you will say "Here he goes again" but one really stands out Floyd Mayweather jr !!! Imagine his career without the"help" of the NSAC ,USADA & Vegas boxing officials. The NSAC vainly tried to cover his back during IV gate but only made his cheating looks more obvious. He was a manufactured champion
Harry Greb with an asterisk, just because there's zero footage of him. So there are lots of tales, lots of stories. But things clouded in the cloak of mystery frequently tend to be overblown. That's not to say Greb wasn't surely great, but the certainty with which many say he'd have taken out Hagler, Monzon, etc. strikes me as peculiar.
I think Mike Tyson was favourite to win every fight he was ever in, except the Lewis fight. Even the rematch with Holyfield he was clear favourite to win. That suggests he was never underrated, and was probably overrated, especially when you look at the Douglas fight where he was such a huge favourite it was ridiculous.
Ali defo, but Still GREAT and Joe Louis, he IS Great, I never ever really thought anybody thought he was overrated, he was Great, Complimented for it, analysed & accessed realistically and 25 Defences Praised in Reverence, as they should be!
Yes, Louis was great, but only for his era. Many on this forum think he stands a chance H2H against modern ATG's like Lewis, Bowe, Tyson, etc. They'll mop the floor with him.
Jack Johnson Harry Greb Joe Louis (& I'm a fan) Sugar Ray Robinson (at 147 - no footage) Carlos Monzon Roberto Duran Roy Jones (he was an incredible fighter, but didn't have the great resume for the amount of hype he got) Ike Ibeabuchi (premature retirement due to bizarre outside life hinder us from knowing what he could have gone to do - but he gets overrated in H2H matches - with some saying he beat a Prime Tyson & Lewis).
How could it be Ali when he cleared out the division twice and missed out on 3 1/2 years of his prime 1964 Ring Rating Sonny Liston Floyd Patterson Ernie Terrell Cleveland Williams George Chuvalo Zora Folley Karl Mildenberger Roger Rischer Eddie Machen Doug Jones 1973 Ring Ratings George Foreman, Champion Muhammad Ali Joe Frazier Ken Norton Jerry Quarry Ron Lyle Earnie Shavers Oscar Bonavena Joe Bugner Jimmy Ellis Chuck Wepner
Ali is overrated in terms of the mythical sense where he is somehow elevated to the status of being unbeatable and the greatest boxer and athlete of all time. Tyson is second but gets massively underrated at times too. SRL easy third he gets rated much higher than the other kings only because of the records on paper but the context of the fights themselves say otherwise.
