well if you look at modern-times (i.e. TODAY... WORLD-WIDE.. not just in America or Mexico or Britain).. and your non-boxing fans.... it goes like this in order of likeliness to know about:

    1) Ali (with breathing space above the rest)

    2) Mike Tyson

    3) De La Hoya

    4) Pacquiao & Hatton

    5) Floyd Mayweather Jr. (he may not have the 'following' but he IS known... a lot of this is thanks to De La Hoya, and to a lesser degree, Hatton)

Its debatable whether or not Hatton is the most popular British boxer of the modern era, I would say that he is, but Hamed also has a good case. Hatton certainly isn't the most popular British boxer ever, that would be Henry Cooper or Frank Bruno.

Hamed was infamous... but he never received the mainstream attention that Ricky got. Like I said, you need to think about this through the eyes of casuals fans (biggest PPVs only) AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, Non-boxing fans (won't even think of buying the PPV... but still hear!)...! & when you consider this, then Hatton is quite a bit more popular today in Britain (& especially WORLD-WIDE!!!) than Naz was back in the day.

How many people who've never watched a big event know who Ricky Hatton is.. vs. Naseem Hamed?

Ricky wins, in America, Mexico, Britain.. heck the whole world!

I say Lennox has a very good case.

Clubber probably comes after Tyson but before De La Hoya.

I think Rocky beats Tyson, though... just about.

With all due respect, you obviously don't know much about Naz or his career. Hamed was globally famous, more so than Hatton. He used to get 10 million + viewers on ITV before he even won a world title.

Hamed had playstation games, sponsorship deals with Adidas and the Ministry of Sound, he did commercials for Audi and Pizza Hut, to say Naz 'didn't recieve mainstream attention' is total nonsense. Naz was a major sporting star in the Britain, the rest of Europe and in random places like Japan as well. Hatton is big in Britain, well known in America, but you won't see him in Japanese whisky commericials or on the cover of Le Monde.

Lennox Lewis is not 'popular' at all, outside of the hardcore. Fantastic boxer, great achivements, but was nowhere near as popular as Bruno, Cooper, Hamed or Hatton.

i would agree with this list but number 4 is definately wrong. those 2 fighters are great and very popular but the great majority of their fame is derived from their country. with that being said Julio Cesar Chavez had all of mexico and the **** load of mexicans in the US to support him.
