Basketball and baseball is bigger in the Far East (Japan, Korea, China--populous countries) and much of Asia. Football is bigger in the Mid East and Africa. So your point meant nothing, until we'll see some real numbers, eh? So who's ignorant anyway? ;)

And by the rest of the world, you mean "Europe". Baseball is very popular throughout large swathes of South America and Asia, sorry to tell you. I'm guessing the Yankees have more global reach than any one soccer club, even though soccer is more popular overall. Btw I'm not a fan of baseball at all.

    my answers:

    Ali

    Yao Ming

    NY Yankees

    lol :good

How come the people that are always loudest in beating their chests about the ignorance of "Yanks" always end up quickly proving themselves to be utterly clueless and provincial? It's like clockwork.

large swathes is a stretch at best. baseball is king in cuba puerto rico and panama. in all other latin american countries it is a distant second. very distant. and hell no the yankees do not have a more global reach than any one soccer club. this coming from a die hard yankee fan. manchester united, real madrid, chelsea, fc barcelona a more popular to name a few.

Sp_Immortal, I'm glad that Spitfire7's post just reinforced your opinions, but things are not as simple as he descibes.

Baseball was banned in China in 1959 and it was as recent as 2002 before a league was even created. Baseball is not popular in China at all. Football however, is one of the most well supported sports in the country, though Basketball is doing ok, but it is certainly not the case that basketball and baseball are more popular than football as stated by Spitfire7.

Football is the most popular team sport in South Korea (god knows what is the most popular in the north!). Baseball is big too, but not more so than football as claimed by Spitfire.

In Japan baseball is the biggest sport, football is second, but basketball isn't even a professional sport there. So again, the statement that both baseball and basketball are bigger in asia than football is incorrect.

In conclusion, the sports are probably on a par overall, but issuing a blanket statement that baseball and basketball are bigger in those countries is not correct. If anything, it would be fairer to claim football is still the biggest given that China has a population more than seven times the combined populations of Japan and Korea. That's a population ratio similar to the UK & US...

As an American now living in the UK, I must say we (americans) are very miopic when it comes to our sport!!!

The truth is that there are probably 10 soccer players who are more famous than any NFL/MLB/NBA player.

I think people from every continent and in every counrty would recognise a picture of David Beckham...would they Kobe, A-Rod, Eli?? No way!!!

Woods and Federer are also very recognisable guys!!!
