That was a WBC International fight, not world title fight.

We are seeing some very odd picks here.

Given some of the disgraceful title defenses that have happened over the decades, any sort of ranking should buy your way out of the thread.

Probably a ranking with one of the sanctioning bodies, or having held a Ring ranking previously would kill the case to be honest.

He beat Joe Beckett, who himself had done nearly nothing at heavyweight. That was George's lone fight of note at heavyweight in previous 8 years. He was a 170 pound non-entity in the division.

But played a good character in Rickard's script, so he got the part.

So in a period of a year he had won the European Heavyweight Championship, and the lineal Light Heavyweight Championship.

Either of these fights would have made him a viable contender.

It should also be noted that he beat the Light Heavyweight Champion, more convincingly than Dempsey had, and this would have been noticed at the time.

Even setting these facts aside, it can't exactly be disputed that the fans wanted to see the fight.

No I really don't see a case here.

By all means argue that Dempsey should have fought someone else instead, but this is a perfectly reasonable title shot.

Rademacher came up with the best money guarantee to the reigning titleholder of any other opponent at the time, so in that sense he was hardly "undeserving."

That was a bad defense bu Stiverne was only Mandatory by technicality when Povektin failed a drug test for Ostraine.

Alex Lepai was a genuine mandatory

It sounds like a fight between them might be interesting then?

Not hard to see how some people might have seen it that way.

This might look a bit like Canelo Benavidez looks now.

If the WBC makes Coco the Clown your mandatory, you kind of get a pass for it.

I remember that fight. Shameful and the very reason why so many people in America still do not take Euro or UK fighters seriously

Carpentier had no real credentials at heavyweight.

Benavidez has the best case at super middle of anyone to fight Canelo.

We are talking about the least deserving contenders to fight for a world heavyweight title here.

A European Heavyweight Champion is not in the argument.

A Lineal Light Heavyweight Champion is not in the argument.

A man who still holds a claim on the White Heavyweight Title is probably not in the argument.

I'll add one. Though he did somehow manage to beat Jimmy Young twice.
Ossie Occasio did nothing else at heavyweight to get a title shot.
Only to get dropped and stopped by a Holmes " Drum roll please".......
    JAB.....
