Joe Goddard knocked around Peter Jackson, a guy mentioned on here, like a rag doll, KO'd Choynski twice, only to go on to become a total drunk. At least for the early crowd of heavies, head to head, he would have been a handful.

Jimmy Young is the only heavyweight I know of that can say that he beat Ali and Foreman. That's nothing to sneeze at.

I agree he would be hell for most plodding sluggers. The ones that would trouble him the most would be the pitbull heavys like Frazier, Tyson and Marciano.

as you might expect, i fully agree with you ETM...but...there sho is a lotta sneezin' that goes on here..if you know what I mean.
Also, I don't care how many times Tommy Morrison had his ass knocked out in his career...that was one disciplined, beautiful performance that he turned in against Big Old Foreman...remember, that was before be coldcocked poor little Michael Moorer. hooray for Tommy.....and shame on MM.

Didn't catch this part of your post....as a matter of fact, I agree 100% with all that too. Except..Frazier and Marciano in particular would have been a nightmare for my man Jimmy....Tyson could be discouraged, and would allow a fighter to hold and he would agree to hold too. Joe and Rocky were more relentless. Joe threw HUMDREDS of punches on the other hand, and Rocky didn't give a damn where his thunder landed.

On this forum probably Ibeabuchi or Akinwande. Both would beat Jimmy Young easily

For resume, Ruiz and McCall stand out.

For h2h ability, I think Damiani and Michael Spinks get underrated.

Floyd Patterson first 2 time heavyweight champ, great speed, good power, came from middle weight to become champ, and gracious.

He had a pretty complete package. He looked great against Biggs and Mercer. I wouldn't expect him to get his nose shattered consistently like that. I think he was probably better than Mercer, it just ended unfortunately for him that time. He didn't do much in his career, but seemed formidable on his best nights.

    He loses a decision, then.

Spinks at HW at his peak, probably. But somewhat deserved considering his route after the Holmes victories.

    Ray Mercer, I think, too.

Well done! I don't think one can really appreciate 60's and 70's Heavyweight boxing without appreciating Smoke!

I would also throw in Jersey Joe and Ezzard Charles. They suffer in comparison to their historical bookends, Louis and Marciano and because some of their greatest fights were against each other.

Honorable mentions to: Big Cat Williams, Eddie Machen, Jim Jefferies and Jimmy Young.

Francesco Damiani had skills for days. Very awkward customer. Was embarrassing Ray Mercer before he copped one on the hooter. Excellent fundamentals, great pace dictator, superb timing.

Ike's a good shout, but I actually think the man he beat in Chris Byrd is the more proven H2H threat to other top fighters. Following the loss he became a much smarter fighter, and was almost impossible to hit cleanly. Very underrated in all aspects.

Sanders was a very dangerous man when he bothered to train. His combination of speed and power, southpaw stance, and unorthodox flurrying would have been a nightmare for a lot of more historically respected fighters.

Oliver McCall had the sort of chin, punching power and total craziness to trouble any heavyweight in history if he had his head screwed on tightly enough to make it through the fight. Unfortunately, that was all too rarely the case.
