Be interesting to see trainers who produced the most title holders.
A bit easier to nail down those statistics.

Probably one of the guys from the old Stillman’s Gym in New York back in the day. Would have trained a ton of fighters in an era where 100-plus fight careers were common.

I don't know what kind of trainer Angelo Dundee was in the 1950s and 1960s during his heyday, but in the 1970s and 1980s I don't think Dundee was one of the best or "winningest" trainers in the sport. In those years, many of the top fighters he worked with lost and the reasons cited were their lack of conditioning or poor strategy during fights.

That's on the trainer. Ali's condition for the Holmes fight and the Berbick fight and the Evangelista fight and the Young fight and all those were on THE TRAINER. Dundee didn't prepare him for those fights properly AT ALL. Dundee still collected his check for being a trainer, so he has to take some blame for the fighter's condition.

Same with Leonard against Duran the first time and Leonard against Hearns the first time. Leonard employed a terrible strategy against Duran for 15 full rounds in fight one, and against Hearns for 12 full rounds in their first fight. Dundee did nothing to change his fighter's approach until before the bell of the 13th against Hearns. He gets credit for the line "You're blowing it son." But he doesn't seem to take any of the blame for Dundee encouraging him to go toe-to-toe with Duran for 15 rounds when it was clear Duran was taking over. And he doesn't take any blame when Leonard was being outboxed for nearly the entire fight with Hearns.

Even Ellis. Jimmy's was an okay middleweight. He put together a strong run at the start of the WBA heavyweight tourney. But Quarry had a broken bone in his neck for the final, and Quarry couldn't do much, and Ellis didn't do much, either. Then Ellis looked like he lost against Patterson. Then Ellis got destroyed by Frazier and Ali. And Ellis was just so-so from then on.

I can't think of any fighter where you could say ANGELO DUNDEE made that guy a better boxer than he was. More often than not, in the 70s and 80s, seems like guys hired Dundee because he was a name and they knew he was laid back and wouldn't give them a hard time if they didn't want to put in the work in camp.

To me, that's not a great trainer. You don't need a guy being a drill instructor all the time. But if you're hired to be a trainer, earn your check. And we can all name a number of fights when Dundee didn't earn his check at all.

I knew Dundee had haters, but had not heard their arguments laid out with such ignorance and bias before. Congratulations on knowing nothing about Angelo Dundee.

So many factors involved that make a great trainer. Any special mentions for trainers that turned a poor fighter into a world beater?
As it can be all well and good working with a brilliant specimen or olympic champ, but I think a real talent is turning around not just individuals talent wise, but potential wise, and often personality wise outside of a sporting capacity to some degree.
